Rating: Summary: If this is the only cookbook you will ever need! Review: My grandmother gave me this cookbook. I have won ribbons at the county fair using recipes from this book. I have had many many cookbooks, but I keep returning to this one for the really good stuff. I gave my 2 daughters most of my cookbooks, but this is one that I made sure to keep. My youngest daughter has been looking for this book for years, she thought that her sister had gotten it when I gave them all the rest. She has been to new book stores, used book stores, has described it to the people and still has not been able to find it. She told me this last night while visiting. This morning I go to Amazon.com and find the book she has been looking for. If I never owned any other cookbook, it would not bother me at all. Oh by the way, my copy of the book is so battered that the binding is duct taped, and inside the cover is a list of all the really good recipes that my girls and I made while they were growing up. Now my daughter has grown and has 4 children of her own and she wants this cookbook to use. So I guess I shall buy it for her, and say it is an " I LOVE YOU" present.
Rating: Summary: I learned to cook from this book Review: I am so happy to see a reprint of this cookbook. My mom taught me to cook so many things from this book and now I have it!! Times have changed, but I still make so many of those dishes. I love the nostalgia of the "woman's role" . For me it's a wonderful "blast from the past".
Rating: Summary: Essential Review: I have a hardcover book (c.1956) Second Edition (first printing) titled "Betty Crocker's Picture Cook Book" :Revised & Enlarged". It is flour stained and spotted with many traces of good recipes cooked again and again. My "numero uno" cook book. Is a copy available?
Rating: Summary: Wonderful nostalgic cookbook Review: My Mom bought her original copy as a new bride in the early 1950's, at the Liberty House department store in downtown Honolulu. As I grew up in the 1960's, this was the book she taught me to cook from. I now have her copy, rather worn for wear, and was absolutely delighted to find this reprint, faithful to the original. The recipes still stand, especially those wonderful cake, bread and cookie recipes. I hope my daughter (now four) will take away as many wonderful memories of this book as I have.
Rating: Summary: I WON THIS COOKBOOK WHEN I WAS 17 YRS OLD Review: THIS BOOK CHANGED MY LIFE FROM ATHLETICS TO COOKING. AS A 17 YR OLD I WON A 1955 CONTEST FOR BEST HOMEMAKER IN HIGHSCHOOL AND RECEIVED THE 1950 EDITION ALONG WITH A BETTY CROCKER GOLD PIN WHICH WERE AWARDED IN THE SCHOOL AUDITORIUM OF BASSSETT VIRGINIA I STILL HAVE THE COOKBOOK AND THE PIN. AS A GOURMET COOK TODAY I STIL REFER TO AND USE REGULARLY MY 1950 EDITION OF BETTY CROCKER'S 1ST EDITION.
Rating: Summary: Brings back such great memories!!!! Review: This was my mother's primary cookbook. I remember watching her as she prepared such amazing meals using the book. She still has her copy and still uses it. I always wanted it. NOW I HAVE IT!!!!! Thanks, Betty!!!!
Rating: Summary: The book I learned to cook from. Review: Memories of a family, and the ability to make my mother smile come to me when I see the old worn out book that sits in a place of honor under glass in my home. In 1967 I was cooking bannana cake and oatmeal cookies from the first edition third printing of Betty Crockers picture cookbook. I can not explain the feeling of childlike joy I had, at seeing my proud mother beam at my efforts to cook from this book. Yes I learned how to cook useing this book, but I also learned how to read. I have very few good memories of my childhood. But the memories I have related to this one book, are most pleasant. My mother found a sixth printing of the first edition, and sent me the old worn out one she had gotten as a wedding present when she married my father. The cover has dark rings burnt into the red and white cover when it was used to put out a fire in a pot that was on the stove. Other special notes and family recipies are written though out. If I ever feel blue, I will simply pull out the book and whip up some oatmeal drop cookies, page 183. I can't "lean" the book up like I did when I was a child. Some pages will fall out. The binder cover is missing and many pages have splatter marks from cakes, frostings, or what ever was being cooked, so long ago. But it is worth more to me than words can discribe. Because I wanted to extend the life of my heir-loom, I started looking for another. I plan to purchase eight copies for siblings and children, I was glad to see it is in reprint. However, I do not enjoy the ring binder. But for my wife I found an original copy in Niles, Michigan at an old antique book store. It appears to be brand new,(never used) First edition, third printing, exactly like the one that was given to my mother.. ($25) Sorry, Don't ask... It is not for sale at any price. I need to see my wife beam as she watches our children do their best to please their parents. I want to be next to thoughs feelings again.
Rating: Summary: The Best Ever Review: I was given this cookbook as a wedding present in 1950. Even thought I received other cookbooks, this is the one I used. In fact, it was used so much, that it is now in tatters. I was so glad to see it re-published. Now I will have one I can read again and be able to share the great recipies with my children and grandchildren. This book is a great gift for new brides. It gives all the basics and substitutions one will ever need and great tasting recipies.
Rating: Summary: So happy to share this with my family! Review: I was the lucky person in my family to inherit my great-aunt's copy of this cookbook. My mother had originally used her copy while a Home Economics student in college and our family used it continually throughout my childhood. I'll be giving copies this year to each of my four siblings who also learned to cook from this book. The blueberry muffins have garnered many a compliment over the years, even in a state where blueberry recipes abound!
Rating: Summary: Its a classic must have of cooking all the basics Review: Every woman in my family has a a copy of the original cookbook. I have a huge collection of cookbooks and by far I refer to it the most. It covers all the basics and then some. If you don't know how to cook, it will teach you step by step. Mine has been so well used that it has permanent cookie dough stains in that section. If someone told me I'd have to give up all my cookbooks except one this is the one I'd keep.
