Rating: Summary: Classic Staple for EVERY kitchen! Review: Looking for just one great but basic cookbook? This cookbook will stand the test of time. After 21 years I just recently replaced mine. I cannot imagine having a kitchen without this most basic tool.Whether you are new in the kitchen or a seasoned pro this book affords a vast array of the basic recipes. You will also find a glossary and measure/weigh information. A great shower/wedding gift or first time homeowner gift. This book has a proven track record and a proven shelf life.
Rating: Summary: Explosive paperback cookbook bang for the buck! Review: 1,232 pages is a bit much to cram between the covers of any standard-bound paperback book, especially a cookbook. Nonetheless, making Marion Cunningham's opus work and lifetime achievement accessible to the financially challenged (like me) makes page-wrestling and eyeglass-fetching a small price to pay. Lately, I have developed a habit of reviewing a recipe in three cookbooks before beginning. If you haven't done that, try it sometime--you may be surprised at the insight it gives you. This Fanny Farmer book is one of those three I use constantly as a reference. The other two? "Joy," and the Rosso and Lukins "New Basic." This cookbook in paperback should have been in two volumes like the paperback Joy used to be. Better yet, in lay-flat single-volume spiral like the new Joy. Do yourself a favor: If you can afford it, buy the hardcover and skip this awkward phase. If you can't afford it, order this one. It's worlds better than doing without this essential kitchen reference and worthy companion to the renowned "Joy of Cooking."
Rating: Summary: Recipes for families Review: This is an outstanding book because it has classic recipes that families will really like, finnicky eaters included. There is enough variety to be interesting while avoiding the overly esoteric. Cooking is my hobby and I have two teenagers who are over six feet tall, so you know the book gets a workout here. I return to it again and again.
Rating: Summary: A kitchen staple for generations Review: When I moved out on my own at 21, I knew I would need a few cookbooks. I chose Fannie Farmer because I remembered using my mom's crumpled, well-worn paperback when I was a kid. I mostly use it for making the traditional things I ate as a kid that you can't find in specialty cookbooks, like basic pancakes, cookies, sauces, etc. If you are looking for something, it's almost always in there, and not too difficult to use. It's even useful as a HOW TO COOK book, with the chapter introduction instructions and diagrams. This book taught me how to cook an artichoke and make brownies from scratch! What a novelty!
Rating: Summary: Family favorite Review: My family has been using books from the Fannie Farmer seriesfor three generations. This newest book offers many old favorites aswell as updated recipies. It probably will not wow many sophisticatedpalates but for the basics this book can't be beat.
Rating: Summary: The Indispensable Kitchen "bible" for all cooks Review: This cookbook is for the novice as well as the experienced cook. I am an advanced cook and use it almost every day, while my 14-year old who is just learning to cook, also finds it easy to use. This would be a great gift for the new bride, or young adult just starting out .
Rating: Summary: Our Family Cookbook Review: I would like to add my "Fannie Farmer" story to those I have just read. I bought my first FF paperback in the early 1970's and used it practically every day. When my sister came to visit, she convinced me to give her my paperback and buy the hardcover, which I did. She lived in Florida and I was in California at that time. To surprise her, I sent her the hardcover copy for Christmas. That same Christmas, she sent my Mom a hardcover copy. Unfortunately, her dogs were attracted to the recipes and chewed her copy while it was still wrapped under the Christmas tree. She didn't confess this right away and kept using her tattered paperback. We all love this cookbook and even though my Mom is a great Italian cook, the recipes in Fannie Farmer are the best for all around cooking. My friends are always joking about my stained and tattered Fannie Farmer cookbook, so I think it's finally time to buy a new one and the 100 Year Anniversary edition is perfect. (Maybe I will even send my sister a copy!)
Rating: Summary: American Cooking Review: I am an exchange student this year in Finland. I was thrilled to receive this book as a gift from my aunt. I forgot to bring along any 'American' receipes and the book has them all.
Rating: Summary: For Basic Cooking, This is "The Kitchen Necessity". Review: I'm 25 and my mother has had her 11th Edition Fanny Farmer Cookbook since before I was born. The pages are falling out and the covers are taped to the binding. Holiday after holiday, this is the only cookbook my mother refers to and my mother is famous for her good cooking. Some say the recipes in here are bland. Listen, if you want to learn how to really cook as though you've been cooking all your life, this is the only cookbook that will teach you! There are basic recipes for poultry, meats, breads, deserts, all from scratch. The recipes are all simple, easy, and delicious. The best part is, once you've learned those basics, it's no time before you start adding your own flavor to make your own recipes. It's perfect for those who can't cook and for those who can because you always need the basics. I just brought one for me and one for my mom. Now I finally have my own Fannie Farmer Cookbook and my mother can finally retire her old one.
Rating: Summary: Even something for vegetarians Review: Want to know how long to steam the corn on the cob or boil potatoes for mashing? You'll find the answers in here. Or maybe you want to make cream puffs or some other fancy dessert. That's here too! I was the only one in my college dorm who knew how to cook at all, and a friend's mother sent this to me for keeping her daughter from starving! As a vegetarian, I generally don't have much use for these kinds of comprehensive cookbooks, so I was skeptical, but this cookbook is incredible. My original paperback is now only a memento--it's stained and falling apart. So invest in the hard cover--you won't be sorry.
