Rating: Summary: Just what the doctor ordered Review: It appears that some people are still not aware that the high protein, low carb diet is not necessarily healthy. This cookbook proves that the American Heart Association does know what it is doing. The recipes are fairly easy, very flavorful, and are, indeed, low in fat and cholesterol, which any diabetic and heart patient knows is important for health and life!
Rating: Summary: Wonderful and tasty recipes! Review: My husband was just diagnosed with high cholesterol and we have both started on a low-fat and low-cholesterol diet. This cookbook has great recipes and everything so far has been delicious! Try the fajitas!! Or what about a Round Roast with brown gravy....delicous. We have not been disappointed with the portions or with the flavor.
Rating: Summary: Just the best! Review: Purchased this book with little hesitation based on the other reviews I read here and the recommendation of a chef friend of mine. I am amazed at how tasty all the recipes are. You can't really tell that it's low fat healthy cooking, just very flavorful and my whole family enjoys it. Get this one, you won't be sorry!!
Rating: Summary: Wrong approach, too manufactured Review: The recipes in this book are very hit-and-miss. Some of them taste good, while others are just horrible and bland. I believe the main problem with the book is that it attempts to replicate foods that are typically quite fattening (such as, beef stroganoff and fried chicken) in a low-fat, low-salt manner. Sometimes this is a success, but often it is a failure. Trying to create a low-fat low-salt diet out of these kinds of recipes is a sham... in order to truly change your diet and your life, you must make a lifestyle change. You need to start eating different foods altogether from the high-fat high-salt foods you may be accustomed to... not shoddy replicas of those foods. There are tons of dishes out there that are naturally low-fat and low-salt, but weren't necessarily "engineered" for that purpose... they just happen to taste great, and people want to eat them. Unfortunately it doesn't seem like any of those recipes are in this book. I was really hoping for a great-tasting collection of naturally healthy meals, rather than this attempt at mimicing a high-fat, high-salt diet in a low-fat, low-salt way. The book just seems way too manufactured, as if the authors said "Hmmm, beef stroganoff is a good dish... how can we make it low-fat and low-salt?" I would rather they were of the mindset of "Where are the good low-fat and low-salt dishes that people love to eat?"
Rating: Summary: Easy & delicious recipes for busy people Review: This book has helped enormously in my new regimen of low-fat, low-sodium & low-cholesterol. It uses ingredients that are common in the kitchen - no exotic things you need to shop all over for. Definitely a great idea for someone starting out to learn to cook healthy, and tasty, food for the entire family!

Rating: Summary: Nice book, good recipies... yet shaky nutritional science Review: This is a nice book, well written and well made. The recipies are actually easy and tasty. Almost all recipies are based on the common, Government-supported low-fat, low-cholesterol theory - in other words: the well-known Food Pyramid. Unfortunately, that is definitely not a plus, since modern nutritional science does not support this 30-year old paradigm at all. Confused? Read on! In fact, mountains of clinical and scientific evidence from peer-reviewed, professional research shows that a low-carbohydrate, high-protein nutritional approach is the best protection for your heart by effectively lowering your 'bad' LDL cholesterol, lowering the all-important triglycerides levels, and achieve a stable and healthy bloodpressure. That is the exact opposite of what this book offers! In other words: the science and theory behind this book is not at all supported by modern nutritional science, and that is, to say the least, quite disturbing. One would expect that a prestigious institute as the American Heart Association would know what is good for it's readers and supporters, or at least would be up-to-date with modern nutritional science. Most recipies can be adapted for a healthy low-carb approach, if you leave out the sugars, flours, starches and other empty carbohydrates - and replace those with artifical sweeteners, soy flour and other reduced-carbohydrate ingredients. Still, all-in-all a nice book to browse in and to get meal ideas from. But NOT what a person with high cholesterol and heart risks (and/or obesity, for that matter) needs.

Rating: Summary: very nice... Review: Very clear layout and a very easy book to handle, much appreciated. Other night we had Spicy Pork Chops, Twice-Baked Potatoes & Herbs, and Oven-Fried Green Tomatoes with Poppy Seeds. Just a coupla ole geezers with slightly elevated everything who are simply trying to keep it from getting any worse! We gave it four stars instead of 5 only because we wish it included more around-the-world recipes (or at least ingredients) that we were not already familiar with.
