Rating: Summary: Brit is Best Review: Jamie O brings simplicity and style to cooking at home. I'm cooking through this book and having lots of fun. Found the CD at Amazon UK and love to groove along in the kitchen.
Rating: Summary: Rissotto worked at last Review: Having watched the TV series, this book was a must. Last night I cooked the Rissotto - My third ever attempt (This time with Jamie at my side) and I'm delighted to say that it tasted great - unlike the previous two occasions. Well done Jamie. ....
Rating: Summary: Got me hooked Review: Perhaps I shouldn't rate it 5 stars, since I've read few other cookbooks, and I assume expert cooks will soon be a bit bored with this book (I mean, I can cook these stuff okay). But this is a special book for me since it got me hooked on cooking, something no other book (or person) managed to do. I guess it has something to do with a fact that the book has been written by an ordinary (-looking) bloke in a simple, friendly tone. In that Jamie Oliver has a natural advantage over the motherly cookbook writers. But no cookbook will sell unless the food is great, and this one clearly is. I guess the book suits most people, but it works wonders for those whose idea of cooking up to now have been reheating a tin (i.e. me).
Rating: Summary: Never fry bacon in the nude Review: Actually, this book has nothing to do with cooking in a state of undress. Naked means here that ingredients are kept to a simple level while taking them to heights of culinary achievement. I like to give this book as a fun wedding shower present because the recipes are straightforward--and the title of course is amusing. Best recipe for me is the risotto, which is a tricky dish to make and comes out wonderfully well here. (And if you have a non-wheat eater in the house, a good risotto recipe is essential as that replaces versatile but forbidden pasta.) It's also a good book to send off with anyone starting out for themselves (after graduating school, moving to a new apartment) because they can buy a list of ingredients and use the recipes to make excellent food that even serves for entertaining. Just for the mushroom risotto (mentioned above) and the basic but excellent roast chicken, someone could become a very fine cook in short order.
Rating: Summary: Great recipies and enjoyable reading Review: Ok I'll admit that the recipes in this book are simple. However, that doesn't mean the flavors are simple. Some of the best recipes out there are ones that use fresh and simple ingredients, which is the premise behind this book. The recipes are good and most are relatively easy to make. Oliver combines great ingredients together to create good food and that's what good cooking is all about. While this book is great for a relative beginner to the kitchen, I think that experienced cooks will also gain some inspiration from it and truly appreciate the message that Oliver is trying to get across, which is that good food doesn't have to be complex and expensive.
Rating: Summary: A real Chipper Chappie! Review: What a top bloke? Easy, well explained recipes that are the tastiest around, 10 out of 10 for Jamie. Delia will remain my "Bible" but I'm more likely to dip into "Jamie" for inspiration 21st Century style. BUT, where are the other titles Amazon? This is just not good enough!
Rating: Summary: Good starter book, would like a wider variety Review: I really enjoyed this book (perhaps in part to liking the show a great deal) but it is a good book for a beginner like me. It shows you some basic recipes from start to finish, and gives a nice starting point to try out your own creativity. The recipes are straighforward, and he keeps to a pretty manageable ingredient range, which is really handy if you don't have a lot of fancy ingredients in your pantry or refrigerator. I purchased maybe half the ingredients on his suggested pantry items, and it gave me the range to cook quite a bit of the dishes in the book. The reason that I did not give this book five stars is that: 1. I wish there were more recipes and 2. Most of the meat recipes were lamb/rabbit/fowl (as an American, it would have been helpful to me personally to have more straightforward chicken or beef, but I am going to try to adapt the recipes). All in all, it's a nice beginner's book, and entertaining to boot.
Rating: Summary: So the recipes are simple...so WHAT?!?! Review: I keep hearing people complain about this book because his recipes are very simple and don't involve lots of complex preperations. Who cares when they all taste so great? Just like on the excellent food network show, Jamie Oliver is very passionate about food in his writing and also has a exceptionally friendly and interesting style of writing. The book is just entertaining to read. Like I said, the dishes are all great. I haven't found a clunker in the bunch and his mushroom risotto was the best I've ever made. My one problem was his basic pasta dough. I'm not sure what was wrong about it (maybe the bread flour) but it was VERY difficult to kneed. Still, I did eventually triumph after adding lots of oil and eggs and the pasta in the end was delicious. I have lots of more lavish cookbooks than this and I still always look through this one when planning to cook. Really, a great cookbook for anyone who loves good food and good writing. I hear that there are three Naked Chef books out in England...when are we going to get the other two?!?!
Rating: Summary: Top cook book ! Review: This is a classic cook book with tonnes of usefull recipes - You'll never be without it and the sequal is just as good {return of the naked chef}. This guy changed the face of cookery here in the UK,and encouraged a whole new generation of people to try their hand at making some "REAL FOOD" instead of all that pre-packaged stuff. Did you know that he's also in a band called "Scarlet division" {he's the drummer} - their single "Sundial" is also available here on Amazon too! and it rocks! Is there no end to this guys talents? Great book - BUY IT.
Rating: Summary: False Advertisement Review: I was going to have a dinner party and decided to get a book to help me along. Being the district leader of like-minded "swingers" this book seemed destined for my shelves. So I got online and ordered up a copy this is where the disappointment began. Ripping open my box I found a smallish book with a rather homely British woman on the cover. I didn't let this discourage me so I opened it up looking for the glossy pages of naked culinary artists. "WHAT!" I exclaimed. There was not a single photo in the entire book. How was I supposed to figure out what food worked best on the human body without this aid. Furthermore, there was not one reference to the erotic properties of food. I could not figure out why the illusions to nudity were attached to this book. Finally, I sat down and produced some of the recipes in the book, which were decent at best. My party went well but the book did not help. I guess the old saying about not judging a book by its cover is true.
