Rating: Summary: Not at all what I thought it would be! Review: I bought the book thinking it would be more of a common food cookbook. I was wrong. Some of the recipes used hard to find items. I was disappointed. The book is already for sale on ebay.
Rating: Summary: Simply delicious Review: I bought this book a couple of months ago, and I've already tried some of the recipes. I don't recommend this book for people who like "plain-no-taste" food, as these recipes are complex in flavors + special spices. The only problem with the book is that there are not that many vegetarian options, so if you need to please your vegetarian friends... try a different one.
Rating: Summary: Pretty Good, but... Review: I had the darn good fortune to see Tyler live and get my book signed - but I won't let my little crush block an attempt to honestly review this book. First, the bad news. Some of the recipes need some editing - for example, the pork tenderloin with prune sauce called for an entire bottle of wine. I made it, and most of the sauce went to waste (at least we did not have to skimp!). In addition, portion sizes are out of control - for example, that same recipe calls for one pound of pork for two people, which in my house is at least twice as much as necessary. I would not recommend this for a beginning cook since it does not have the reference value of a really simple and basic cookbook. On the plus side, it is good for someone like me, who has moved past basics and is trying to stretch. The Dad's Meatloaf is a nice change from my standard recipe. The variety and creativity of the recipes makes it a nice addition to my library, and the photos are just succulent.
Rating: Summary: Tyler's success has not changed his charm Review: I had the pleasure of knowing Tyler Florence before his success, when he was a student of culinary arts. I find his book a reflection of who he is as a person, a professional, and as a chef. Years ago, he impressed me with his tenacity for food. His book, the simple but so delicious recipes, and his TV personality are only a reflection of who he is. His book is written in an interesting style, and the recipes are easy to follow. He makes cooking not simply a chore or a pleasure, but a passion. I recommend this recipe book as one that should be placed in every kitchen to someone who loves the taste, delicacy and joy of food. Rating: Summary: Great Guy, Great Cook Review: I had the pleaure of meeting Tyler in Miami when he was filming his Ultimate Paella episode with the Three Guys from Miami. (Three guys from Miami Cook Cuban -- ISBN: 158685433X) His recipes are inventive, easy to prepare, and oh so delicious. Unlike so many cookbooks, this one is well written and interesting to read. I highly recommend this book!
Rating: Summary: An essential cookbook for a novice chef Review: I have owned this cookbook for exactly one week and I have already used four of the recipes (successfully!)--and I hardly ever used a cookbook in the past. I have volumes of cookbooks on the shelves in my kitchen, but I purchased most of them because they had pretty pictures. Often I find that the beautiful cookbooks supply recipes that are too complicated for the novice cook (like me)and require ingredients that are difficult to find. Like his TV show (Food 911), the recipes in "Real Kitchen" are unfussy to prepare, the ingredients are readily available at most grocery stores, and the results are so elegantly satisfying. He puts interesting, innovative twists on old favorites, like roasted chicken with Moroccan spices and crepes with figs and ricotta. The recipes I have tried thus far are the blueberry scones with lemon glaze--to which my English husband gave high praise, horseradish burgers with Havarti and tomato remoulade--a real hit at our barbecue, cold fried chicken--just like my grandma's since you soak it in buttermilk, and a blueberry-lemon tart--delectable. I highly recommend this cookbook to any kitchen novice. The text is witty, the layout is easy on the eyes, and yes--the photos are fabulous.
Rating: Summary: Heads up Review: I just tried my first two recipes from "Real Kitchen" and thought I'd give other cooks a heads up. Last night I cooked the Slow-Baked Salmon with Asparagus and Honey-Onion Marmalade. My guests said it was the best salmon they had ever had! However I am fairly sure that there is an error in the recipe. I followed the directions and baked the fish/asparagus for 20 minutes at 250 degrees but the fish was still fairly raw at the end of the recommended cooking time. Since I had 6 hungry guests I covered the baking dish with foil and increased the temperature to 350 degrees. It took another 20 minutes of cooking time but it was great when it was finally finished. I started with fresh salmon (not frozen) and my oven was preheated and works just fine so it looks to me like there is probably an error in the recipe. But back to the good news about this recipe. The Honey-Onion marmalade was excellent! The herb puree was a very nice touch. I also cooked the Garlic-Chive Mashed Potatoes and have never had such smooth mashed potatoes. They were like silk! I am looking foward to trying more of Tyler's recipes from this book as we really enjoyed the first two.
Rating: Summary: Tyler Florence's Real Kitchen: Really great cook book! Review: I live for food and after doing about a dozen of the recipies in this book I can see that Tyler Florence does too. I have yet to find a horrible or mediocre recipe. It seems nowadays that any famous chef can throw together a cook book with bad recipies or ones that seem to be missing something and still sell a ridicious amount of books. This book, along with the recipies in it, was very thought out. At this point it is my number one cook book and would recomend it to anyone who enjoys food and takes pride in putting something on the table that will make taste buds water and make anyone who eats the recipes in it to beg for more.
Rating: Summary: a great cookbook Review: I received my copy in the afternoon and by that night I had already made one of the recipes. I was a fan of the author from the tv show Food 911 and used many of his recipes from that show, so buying this book was a no brainer. I can't wait to try out the rest of these recipes in this book. I would recommend this cookbook. The book is nicely done, and has a good introduction about what essential cooking supplies one needs.
Rating: Summary: Awesome! Tyler is a genious Review: I tried a four recipes out of this book and they turned out awesome. All the meals my wife exclaimed were better than recent outings to some of the local restaurants. Tyler makes things easy and the Ingredients are most things out of an oridinary kitchen. You don't have to go to some exotic grocer to prepare one of his great dishes. Tyler is a genious, as most of his recipes are different takes on recipes that have been around forever. He puts his own sense into the proportions of ingredents and VIOLA! you have an amazing tasting dish that is much better than some of the old recipes you use to cook over and over again.
