Rating: Summary: A good reference book but too basic Review: I agree that this is a good reference book for vegetarian cuisine. However many of the recipes are rather basic and boring. Not a great book if you're looking for something new and exciting to spice up your vegetarian cooking or do some real vegetarian entertaining.
Rating: Summary: This is not food porn... Review: An excellent reference. The book exemplifies the California expression of cuisine which is pretty naked. If you believe the sauce is king this is not the book for you. It's spirit is simple and so are the recipes but it is an excellent one stop reference.I have been very pleased by the book and admire the fact that it sticks to basics. Nothing annoys more than recipe books heavy on pretty pictures but skimpy on recipes or worse yet, the recipes are lifted. Highly recommended as a reference and an emergency source for inspiration.
Rating: Summary: A Cookbook You Will Refer To Time and Again Review: You don't have to be vegetarian to get your money's worth from this cookbook. I refer to this cookbook often to find excellent side dishes that compliment my main courses. I enjoy all the helpful information ranging from how to pick out a good eggplant to roasting peppers. And what I truly appreciate is that every recipe I use, from the Tomato and Broccoli Salad to the Pear Pudding, turns out tasting wonderful and recieves many compliments from my guests. If you are looking for a cookbook that you can trust with failproof recipes, this book is definitely for you!
Rating: Summary: Still Hungry Review: If God had wanted us to be vegetarians, he wouldn't have made all of the animals out of MEAT...
Rating: Summary: Very comprehensive Review: I am a new cook, and thought I would be intimidated by this huge volume, but Deborah makes everything accessible. I don't care about food exchanges - this is not a diet book! This is about vegetarian food you can eat on its own or use to accompany non-veg stuff.
Rating: Summary: disapointed - no nutuitional analysis Review: alas !!! there was no nutritional analysis. So i did not buy the book. Many people have to know how many carbs, fat, sugar, etc. in their food. It helps also to have the food exchanges. I hope she will have a revised edition someday. Then i may buy it because the book & recipes looked really great.
Rating: Summary: This is one of the top three cookbooks I have ever used. Review: The beauty of this cookbook is the simplicity of its recipes. In addition to great recipes, she is teaching a technique of cooking that is intuitive and emphasizes the flavor of the foods rather than using a lot of herbs that may mask delicate flavors. I am an avid cook and I adore this book! I am buying it for my mother for Christmas.
Rating: Summary: I relished it Review: Madison is a talented writer, first and foremost. She can explain things clearly, without belaboring herself as some authority or star. And she's a great cook--her recipes work. I'm not a vegetarian by habit or nature--but I've become one mid-week by choice. An extraordinary book in a world blinded by fat ladies and grilling frat boys. I will keep it for years.
Rating: Summary: One of the best cookbooks! Review: I've been thinking about going vegetarian for years. Now, I'm slowly changing my diet. This cookbook has taken away my fear of not being satisfied. With this cookbook, I feel, not only satisfied but, really good about the choices available for meatless cooking. My boys, ages 14 & 12, are eating the meals from this cookbook as well. They even ask for foods over again. That doesn't happen very often on good for you foods. I'm real pleased.
Rating: Summary: Fantastic!!! Review: This is quite simply the best all-around vegetarian cookbook that I have ever seen. If I was allowed to keep only one cookbook (heaven forbid), this would be it. I use it all the time.
