Rating: Summary: Excellent ! Review: Given that this book came out late in the product cycle for Oracle81 its no wonder that it is the best in class primer for sales people and dp professionals new to Oracle81. The examples ALL work and the style and presentation are easy to follow and are based on real world installation and development. The structure of and presentation of a development project from business requirement to application maintenance and tuning is a practice that other authors should be willing to adopt to add clarity and understanding to people new to the environment. It needs a CD for the examples. This book would be a great classroom text, especially if accompanied by a good reference manual. Thumbs up to Mr. Hotka.
Rating: Summary: Training Employees Review: I have about 20 employees that I need get up to speed in a short amount of time. Dan's book; Oracle8i from scratch is great. It takes you from the beginning to the end of a project. I think I went through 12 Oracle books before I picked up Dan's. I read throught the first five pages and knew that this was the perfect book to train new employees. I think most important not only are my employees learning, but they are really enjoying building a project using Oracle 8i from scratch.
Rating: Summary: Excellent hands-on introduction to Oracle 8i Review: I highly recommend this book to everyone who wants to learn faster the basis of Oracle 8i. The newbies can find very consistent introduction to SQL and PL/SQL in the appendixes of the book. You just need to download the source code from the author's site and to enjoy of reading to this excellent book.
Rating: Summary: Not a good buy Review: I own every Oracle book that has been published in the last 5 yrs on Oracle. I am a Database Engineer. This book is a waste of money. The author (from quest software) should have at least provided a CD with the tools that he used throughout the book. I am big on tools that make my life easier, but to use third party tools is a waste of time. Oracle comes bundled with some fair tools, the rest you can download. I bought this book before I really looked at it, only to realize it added no value to the subject. As a seasoned Oracle veteran (10 yrs)...Don't waste the money....
Rating: Summary: A Note from the Author Review: I would like to respond to some of the recent negative reviews of my book: Oracle8i from Scratch. The individuals who have submitted '1 star' ratings have years of Oracle experience. This book was intended for beginners, those who know very little or nothing at all about the Oracle database. I have received dozens of E-Mails praising how appropriate the content was for the individual's level of experience. The knowledge they have gained from working with the functioning examples provided at the book's web site, and the easy-reading styles presented in this book have proved invaluable to the beginner. My intent is that the Oracle8i topic be covered thoroughly but kept simple enough for the entry-level reader to understand and learn from. When I am learning a new programming environment, I enjoy a working example to relate to. The 'from Scratch' series of Que Publishing books is intended to provide the reader with a working example to guide them through the learning process. I have provided this kind of learning. I personally find the book's web site both easy to use and easy for me to make adjustments to based on reader's feedback. I also prefer the inclusion of a CD or diskette in a book as a reader, but as an author, I find the web site easy to direct folks to as well as to make any necessary changes. If you are new to the Oracle development world, I hope that you give this book a try...you are the target audience for this book. Dan Hotka, Author.

Rating: Summary: DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK Review: The cover promises a whole lot but once inside, you will feel that you have been taken on the ride of the century. The author tries to cover too much within too little pages. Source listings are incomplete with no CDROM included (available only via the Internet) with no proper sense of direction leaving an Oracle newbie confused and bewildered with the 'complexities' of Oracle. Definitely a no-no, keep your money for something better.
Rating: Summary: New To Oracle8i Development, This Is Your Solution Review: This book is great! With so many manuals out on the market about Oracle that are only for true developers it is about time there is one for people. This book provides a true picture of the application lifecycle from design, development, testing, and implementation. The author not only provides simple examples he gives us a taste of the other more complex books on the market with the actual SQL statements that are used to build the application. I really like how the author shows the next step to Java for Oracle, and after reading this book I am able to take the next step too.
Rating: Summary: New To Oracle8i Development, This Is Your Solution Review: This is just the book I have been searching for. Having graduated from the SMU Oracle Program, developing an application on a step by step basis was my solution for learning Oracle8i. I highly recommended this book to anyone who is new to Oracle8i and wants to go thru an Oracle8i development (DB, tablespaces, tables, indexes, triggers, forms, reports, html, java, sql, pl/sql, and more). Need I say more. Dano, you have done an excellent job and keep up the good work. I rest my case.
