Rating: Summary: Pick it up, flex your arms, develop and tone your biceps... Review: but don't expect this book to do much else for you. I received the book when I took an instructor-led class (#1017). During the class we did the labs, which were so-so. The instructor always had to point out errors in the text and instructions. The self-check questions at the end of each chapter had some benefit.Don't expect to pass the Visual InterDev exam (for MCSD certification) by either reading this book or taking Course #1017. Some of the information is included on the exam, but there isn't enough detail or explanations in the text to prepare you. I just passed the exam this morning, but that's because I used the online MeasureUp exams and studied the printouts. I found that to be far more beneficial. This is a *lousy* reference book. I can't imagine ever encountering a problem and wanting to look it up in here. It just isn't designed for that purpose. I would rather find the info I need by searching the web. If you are new to web development or InterDev, this book can help you get your feet wet. Otherwise, your money would be better spent elsewhere.
Rating: Summary: Excellent tutorial on Web Development Review: I found this book to be just what it's title says, how to develop a web application using Visual InterDev 6.0. This book takes you one step at a time developing a sample web application which uses an SQL server database and server side COM components. Along the way you learn how to use Visual InterDev, Active Server Pages, integrate VBScript into your web pages, connect to a server database using ADO, creating COM objects that access the server database, calling the COM components from an Active Server Page. Yes, this book uses Microsoft technologies as I would have expect since it is published by Microsoft Press. If you are going to use Microsoft's IIS as your web server than this book is an excellent one to learn overall web application development. Otherwise, this book is not for you.
Rating: Summary: Pathetic Review: It doesn't even deserve 1 star but the Amazon rating system won't let you choose 0. If you like debugging buggy Microsoft examples this is the book for you. This book (and the examples & solutions on the accompanying CD) are one of the best reasons why Microsoft ought to be broken up by antitrust laws. They are so big that they have no compelling reason to write books that are valuable resources, or products that work very well.

Rating: Summary: Call it InterDev for Dummies Review: The Mastering Series is poor book for mastering ASP. Consider it a basic help file with some simple examples. To learn ASP and InterDev, get the Wrox book. Microsoft Press should be embarassed putting out this material.
Rating: Summary: No JavaScript for Client Scripting Review: The samples in the book are not much of use, since they are writen in VBScript and are not supported by Netscape.
Rating: Summary: Pick it up, flex your arms, develop and tone your biceps... Review: This is by far one of the worst technical books I have ever read. It reads like it was written by the marketing department, not by developers. The least they could have done to make this book worth the price is to include the Visual InterDev software on the CD, but they don't.
Rating: Summary: Disgrace Review: This is the first Microsoft press book on a Microsoft product that is so woeful that it broke my paradigm. Thank God, I have the MCSD curriculum which I switched to after enduring 3 gruelling chapters of this "Mastering" book. The MCSD book (also by Microsoft) is lovely and has an amazing Appendix at the back on VBScripting. The labs are alive and clarify the topics. This book is everything "Mastering" is not. This Mastering book should be withdrawn. It is a disgrace to the Microsoft Press (coming from a Microsoft fan, you'd know this is serious). The practices are like quizzes and the labs like impregnable woods. They are more like a test of advanced knowledge, rather than a work-through. It systematically frustrates you. A mastering book which does not teach you in a grounded manner but rather encourages you to copy sample codes and reuse is truly a marketing book, not a developer's Mastering book. If it got better after Chapter 3, then accept my reservations. But this book is still pooh, even if so. I would almost have asked for a refund, because I don't want to keep seeing it. Someone may want to borrow it without my knowing and get their impressions of Visual InterDev seered. Pooh book! Don't buy this book if you want to learn and perfect VI. buy the MCSD book on VI 6.
