Summary: Wish I'd had this 3 years ago!
Review: I started migrating from NT work to SunOS & Solaris in 1996, due to the Internet boom, etc. It was a tough transition--this book would have saved me a lot of time. I've recommended it to an NT guy at work who's hoping to make the leap into Solaris work, he bought it and he is picking up stuff VERY quickly. As noted, the design is good: let someone look up a task based on what they know, then provide the "translation".

Summary: Exactly what I was looking for
Review: I'm an NT guy who is trying to quickly pickup Solaris skills. I found that this book does what the cover says. I've leveraged my NT skills in to some Solaris knowledge. It's also a great book to flip though for information on the fly.

Solaris Guide for Windows NT Administrators will give anyone with NT knowledge a start in Solaris. You'll be able to setup and troubleshoot the basics of a networked Sun computer. However, if you are interested in focusing on Solaris rather than just learning the basics (Network setup, DNS etc) then I would suggest this book plus something more.

I'm finding Sobell's book to be a vertable goldmine.

Summary: For Unix Beginners only
Review: I've played with Linux and Unix before and desired some beefy material on Solaris. This wasn't it. The chapters go like this: "The NT Way" and "The Solaris Way". Very light weight. If you have any Unix experience, this book isn't for you. I personally found the Solaris Systems Administrator's Guide much more useful.

Summary: Kindergarten for System Administrators
Review: If you are new to computers and could benefit from the history of computing laced with super-simple 4-line examples, then this may be for you. If, on the other hand, you have any experience with system administration - NT or otherwise - this book will be a total waste of money. I'm sending this one back. Had I seen this book in a store, I would have put it back on the shelf immediately and walked right out of the children's section.

Summary: You should read the book first in the library before you buy
Review: If you have no experience with UNIX, maybe you will find something interesting in this book. The intention is right, "this is NT way... and this is Solaris way", but, the entire organization is awful, one example: you are reading and then find something like "go to page 123..." and you are in page 123! You better review it before you buy.

Summary: Great book for MSCEs
Review: Notice how all of the bad comments on this book come from people who really shouldn't have been reading it in the first place? The positive reviews reflect reality; this book is worth its weight in gold for newbies to the Solaris world. I highly recommend it.

Summary: Good to get you started
Review: This is a good book to get an NT admin started with Solaris (I used Solaris 7). It definitely keeps the frustration levels down when you first power up the box and can't get it connected to the network. It assumes you know how to implement NT with TCP/IP and is very brief and to the point. It doesn't cover much - only the basics to get you started, but what do you expect for 140+ pages? I liked it because I didn't have to read endless yammering to get something done. I gave it 4 stars because it is just a bit pricy for the content, but still great. It's formatted like -

This is how you do it in NT: Bla bla bla.

This is the Solaris Way: Bla bla bla.
