Rating: Summary: A solid Purchase Review: I actually got this book from my jobs library. I think this book is very well written exceot for the sections on subnetting. The author leaves alot of ambiguities in this section. If you didnt know anything about subnetting before this book... you might leave it still not knowing, or even worse have the wrong idea. Even with the aforementioned problem this is a solid book and very informative.
Rating: Summary: Good explanation of TCP/IP. Review: I liked this book a lot. The author gave a lot of clear cut examples, defined everything completely, and illustrated a lot of main ideas. I definitely recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn IP. Make sure you understand the sample test questions the author gives you. I passed the test with a 883 after reading this book, and a little bit of effort. The only bad thing about this book is that the first and last chapters are not really that helpful in terms of its relavance with IP. They are only introductions, and test taking tips respectively. But all in all it is a great book.
Rating: Summary: Buy The Later Version Instead Review: No. Don't get this book. Instead get the SAMS Teach Yourself TCP/IP 2nd Edition in 24 Hours. The 24 hour book looks like an upgrade of the 14 our, tho it does not say so. The 14 hour book is flawed. After the first few chapters it starts using concepts without explaining them first. It got lost in the mechanics of binary ANDing while attempting to explain subnet masks, confusing the subject no end. When it failed to adequately explain connectionless vs connection protocols I went looking, found the "Second Edition". Someone at SAMS realized the poor quality of the 14 hour book and corrected the situation with the 24 hour one. Note, however, that I am not an MSCE candidate, sa maybe I missed appreciating something related to MSCE in the 14 hour edition.
Rating: Summary: Get this book! Review: Statement #1) I read the TCP/IP for Dummies - I could not grasp TCP/IP at all! Failed the TCP/IP test. Statement #2) I read the Sam's TCP/IP In 14 Days - This book has complete, understandable coverage of TCP/IP. I passed the TCP/IP test. Statement #3) Get the book.
Rating: Summary: Disappointing Review: This is THE BOOK for TCP/IP. It gets straight down to the nitty-gritty of what you should know--but also explains difficult concepts in detail. The review questions are good, but the book lacks self-test software. (I don't count that point against the score of 5--considering the low cost of the book compared to other TCP/IP books). Anyone with one year's experience in IT should be able to tackle the test with this book.
Rating: Summary: Good explanation but some mistakes Review: Very good in explaining tcp/ip and its implimentation with NT4 but I found an usually high number of mistakes which were probably typigraphical in nature.
