Summary: The full box and dice!
Review: At first the size of the book looks extremely daunting but don't let that fool you. The book manages to break up the monotony of learning something new by including little exercises to review what you just completed at very strategic points.

I found the exercises very clear and fairly easy to follow, especially for a complete novice to Inventor such as myself. You get the sense that you are actually creating a project and doing something useful rather than just going through the motions of the exercise. Even basics such as filling in properties and modifying the BOM were covered. As all MDT users know this can be a quick way to self inflicted baldness when trying to figure it out.

All in all it has made my transition from MDT to Inventor a smooth one and dare I say it, a pleasure. What's more the authors web site is full of other useful tips and tricks to help everyone, from beginners to the more experienced and include reviews of her other books.

Summary: She teaches?
Review: I know why the author gave herself 5 stars, she is the only one that thinks highly of herself. I agree with the last reviewer, "This book is NOT for the "teach-yourselfer"", and I will try to return this book. The book is written very, very sloppy.

Summary: Not for teaching yourself
Review: I love shopping Amazon primarily because of the reviews, which I have found to be much more useful in choosing a book rather than reading the jacket at a bookstore...5 stars and I'm interested.
This book is NOT for the "teach-yourselfer", and I'd return it if I hadn't marked up the first 1/3 of it.

The author failed on several key points:
1) It's sloppy. You can tell it's a hastily updated version of a text for a prior version of Inventor. Many of the screen shots don't match mine. I have started with Inventor 5, and assume the screen shots are from a prior version.
2) Much is assumed (overlooked?). Most of the examples simply say do this/do that in a few short sentences. I had a heck of a time doing some of this/that because some of the intermediate clicks were not spelled out for me - hey, I'm a beginner, that's why I bought this book.
2a) A good beginning book repeats each and every step over and over (called reinforcement). This one doesn't.

I'm sure this is a good text for a teacher of I5, because there were many times I wanted to raise my hand and ask what I was doing wrong. I'm currently trying to insert an AutoCAD drawing, and have spent 3 hours on it with no success. Unbelievable.

Bottom line the tutorial included with the package is better and I'm shopping for another book. This one's hitting the round file.

Summary: R5 Rubicon Rocks!
Review: The author of the Rubicon series brings back an updated edition for Inventor R5. Completely new exercises, better organized, and a thorough review of the new fundamental features in R5, such as textures, auto dimensions, and punch tools. All the files used in the textbook can be downloaded for free from the publisher's website. Sample chapters can be found on the publisher's website and the author's website.

Instructors and students will appreciate the sample tests included to help users focus and learn the various features, toolbars and menus.
