Rating: Summary: Truly a classic text and a MUST HAVE Review: Charles Mohnike has not only created the best possible text for learning Coldfusion MX, but I believe he has truly created a classic text that stands above all others in the IT industry.
I used his book to learn Coldfusion, and continually refer to it as I try to solve problems.
Charles has the unique insight to include just about everything a programmer would need to know to move from a novice to intermediate Coldfusion programmer.
Charles also presents his work with cheeky good humor that really expresses the humor and culture of the web world (we are pretty whacked, generally speaking).
If you are learning Coldfusion, or need a general referral text, this is the book.
We can only hope that Charles will write an advanced Coldfusion tutorial one day to follow up on this monumental text.
Rating: Summary: Great Place to Start for ColdFusion Review: I found this book to be a very good read, and all I neede to know to start utilizing ColdFusion to develop interactive Web pages. It helps if you have a background in other client/server technologies, and you definitely need to have a background in relational DBs. Being that I use Visual Basic, WML, and ASP with multiple DBs, made it a very easy read. I would expect the same for any intermediate developer coming from a similar technology. If not, this is still a very strong beginning book for ColdFusion. I usually pick up similar Sams series on any topic that I need to get a handle on in a very short time frame (I needed to be able to talk about ColdFusion in 3 days this time), and more often than not they get me where I need to be. This one is no different.
Rating: Summary: Excellent book Review: If you are new to ColdFusion, but an experienced Web developer, I can tell you from experience that you will gain a lot from this book--fast. It has the typical convenience and layout of all SAMS books, and it has all the content you need to get yourself started in scripting real, practical ColdFusion Web applications. If you are an expert developer, you really don't need any books. You can gain all you need by looking up ColdFusion reference sites on the Internet. But then, you will find information on all the ColdFusion tags, but may not necessarily find perfect examples all on one site. If you are the type of person who wants easy, smoothly flowing reading before a nights sleep, then this book is definitely for you. It doesn't just tell you what each tag does, but it also tells you practical uses and examples. There's always the tag reference in the appendix in the back of the book. Plus, half the time you are online you are doing things other than putting effort into learning something like ColdFusion, so by purchasing this book, you will guarantee that you'll learn something about ColdFusion. Having a physical book like this is good reference to have next to you while you are programming the back-end of site, whether it's a shopping cart, content management system, online inquiry form, etc. I read most of this book as I found the content very valuable, and have afterwards developed a few web sites using ColdFusion. I am now feeling confident with a little more self-study, I will take the Certified ColdFusion Developer examination.
Rating: Summary: In from the Cold... Review: If you're an "in the trenches" webmaster, like myself, who has to wear every single digital hat in his/her organization, you can't afford not to buy Sams Teach Yourself ColdFusion in 21 Days. Charles Mohnike deserves triple royalities for this title -- in fact, I wish I could have bought two! The strength of this work is truly in the writing. Mohnike covers the ins and outs of Cold Fusion with well structured, easilly read chapters that teach, test and empower the reader in his/her quest forward to the next topic. Further, the tone of the text, at times quite humorous, has the feel of having your best, code crunching pal next to you the whole step of the way. Translation: It isn't arrogant and presumptive like so many computer training textbooks on the market. But, shucks, that's just rhetoric. The proof is always in the pudding. In a little under 8 weeks, I've used Cold Fusion to build 1 extranet site, an interactive vendor index and an online publishing system for my company's online legal newspaper. The latter project - built using the examples offered in the book - saved us from spending $22,000 for an extremely basic content management system. Any questions?
Rating: Summary: Good Book For Newbies Review: The author is quite good in explaining things, however there is no CD accompanying the book. According to the technical representative, the samples can be found at http://www.... These are samples, however for a previous version of this book and may or may not work. If you don't want to hassle with this - Don't buy the book!

Rating: Summary: Good Information but Missing Critical Pieces Review: This book came recommended at a brief ColdFusion class I attended and I've found it useful except for one major flaw: the files it references for download are not the files that are used in the book. They may have the same name, but the tables are all different, the fields are different and the promised tab delimited text versions are not there at all. As a Macintosh user, I have no use for Access files, which are all that is provided (except that even those are wrong). Providing downloable files is a smart way to keep content and tools in sync -- as opposed to a cd that may go out of date when a book is updated. It seems a simple thing to correct this, but so far, no dice. My comments to this extent per their feedback email address have also been ignored. So, be prepared to create your own test database -- something you shouldn't have to do when focusing on new coding technique and database design.
Rating: Summary: Great Book for beginners Review: This book has been a great help. I am new to ColdFusion and web programing in general. I got this book when I was handed this project and was using ColdFusion in no time. The book is well worn after a few months use. I have moved on to other books for more indepth help since. I still use it nearly everyday.
Rating: Summary: Mohnike does it again! Review: This book is specific to Coldfusion 5, the first release under Macromedia. Mohnike has done another great job of explaining all of CF's new features without using that annoying techie jargon, and without talking down to us. Anyone who wants to pick up CF quickly and easily should get this book! This is the one I give to my new employees to bring them up to speed, and often find the old hands thumbing through frequently.
Rating: Summary: Good Book For Newbies Review: This is a great book for ColdFusion newbies and web development beginners in general. While covering most of the important ColdFusion topics, this book is primarily for beginners (eg in one chapter it explains the concept of 'view source') so if you're after anything more than the basics, it's best that you look elsewhere. That said, the book does an excellent job of introducing the reader to ColdFusion and, if tested, would probably meet its goal of enabling a completely new user to teach themselves ColdFusion 5 in 21 days (or even less). This book is well written with few (if any) errors. The tips and examples are useful, with the examples noticeably uncluttered by superfluous formatting code that often appears in these sorts of books. The Q & A section at the end of each chapter is a nice touch, and the exercises offer a good way to revise the content of the given chapter (although an accompanying CD or website containing suggested code for each exercise would be handy). Bottom line: 'Sams Teach Yourself Macromedia ColdFusion 5 in 21 Days' is a good resource for web developers wanting to learn ColdFusion 5.
