Rating: 4 stars
Summary: for a communications engineer
Review: The book is directed to the communications engineer interested in VoIP. It is deeply technical. Starting with chapters that quickly go over various modulation methods, like PCM and differential PCM, that are used for communications. The book also has a precis of the Internet fundamentals.

But it then goes heavily into explaining the low level mechanics of VoIP. There is some quick discussion about the business aspects. You can see, though, that it is meant to give you a good working grounding in this field. Other texts might go more into the user level experience. Those gloss over how difficult it can be to actually have to implement it, while paying careful attention to securing it from evesdroppers.

The cryptography-level discussion is moderate. You don't have to know too much about the finer details of a given cryptosystem. But mostly how to use it.
