Rating: 4 stars
Summary: slackware excellent, bundled book lacks
Review: after starting w/ slackware 3.6 and trying caldera, mandrake and SuSE i found myself full circle back with what i think is the best distribution of linux available- Slackware. It is stable, simple to use, COMPLETELY configurable and doesnt dump a slew of unnecessary stuff onto your machine. On it's own, Slackware gets 6 out of 5 stars!

The bundled book, however, is a different story. It seems to be a reprint of the book w/ slack 4.0 and, i must admit, is sadly in need of updating. information is available for installation and configuration but requires a lot digging. Further, the information is not very in-depth (although two points need to be made: a) the focus of the book IS limited to installation, configuration and a brief intro to UNIX commands and b) half the fun is figuring it out on your own).

My biggest complaint is that i found difficulties when referencing the index in the back of the book. the page numbers did not match up in many cases (not even close!). This obviously makes information difficult to find, and, for a new user may be enough to negate the joys of linux to the point of quitting.

My recommendation would be to instead purchase the Slackware unleashed book (w/ accompanying cdrom) or, for experienced users simply purchase the cdset (if you are interested in zipslack or bigslack- there are no commercial packages on the cdrom set). a third option is to simply download it for free and work it out on your own using online documentation.

fnord! slack rules!
