Rating: Summary: Chapter on servlets contains wrong information Review: More java in 21 days will start from where java in 21 days droped off. This is fill with useful information and I think everyone should read it.
Rating: Summary: Chapter on servlets contains wrong information Review: My wife bought this book to get updated on new Java technologies. I have been using the Java Servlets since their inception and am finding the information too terse and incorrect. I just could not stand it and have my wife returned it right away. The book stated that a Java Servlet is a "program"; this concept is very misleading and erroneous. A Java servlet is a Java object that runs inside a thread; multiple servlets run in multiple threads, but within the SAME process. Hence, any class within a servlet that contains static objects can be referenced by any servlets. However, if a class lives under a different process, that class' static objects cannot be referenced from classes from other processes. This distinction is very important for servlet developments. Discussing a Java servlet as a "program" includes the connotation that Java servlets live in different processes, which is WRONG; the Java servlets live under the SAME process. This concept should be stressed. The directory structure description of the Java Web Server missed the etc directory under Solaris. The coverage of the Java Servlet API is so shallow that the information is of hardly any use. The coverage in Java Network Programming by Elliotte Harold, though outdated, is much more useful for any serious Java servlet development. Moreover, it talks about Java Web Server release 1.0.1; the Java Web Server 1.1 has been released for some time, while the Java Web Server 1.2 is already going into beta. The coverage of Java Web Server release 1.0.1 is inadequate.
Rating: Summary: Great reference but getting a little dated Review: Of all the Java books that I own, this is the one that gets the most use. Although it is starting to show its age, it covers each topic in a concise manner, but with enough detail to understand the basics. But what keeps me coming back to this book are the code samples. These are easy to read, well documented and give me exactly what I need to get my work done.

Rating: Summary: Well organized and easy to read, but make sure... Review: This is a well organized and easy to read book. It really helped me grasp the concepts of Java. This information is obviously outdated by this year of 2000, but it is better to start out with old Java i am sure, than to skip right to the new stuff. Also, make sure you have read the first book. It is entitled "Teach yourself java in 21 days" by Laura Lemay. Laura Lemay's book is really out of stock in every book store you look. The only way to really find it is online, and most are already used. YOU NEED LAURA LEMAY'S BOOK FIRST. It is important that you do. Other than that, this is a very good book to get the basics on.
