Summary: Check the Blueprint for R&S Written
Review: Check the Cisco blueprint for R&S exam, be sure that the books you use cover all listed topics...some cover routing protocols and switching adequately but don't cover QoS and Multiservice, for example. Cisco's website is also a great study resource for the new R&S written exam.

Rating: 4 stars
Summary: Taking you to the exams - all you have do is pass them.
Review: Having worked in the IT industry for over 14 years, and having worked in the classroom for over 5 years I am always looking for new material for the students. Sybex has made a reputation for releasing first rate material in the Cisco certification arena and this book is no exception to that rule.

In over 1000 pages every CCIE Routing and Switching Exam objective is covered and explained. I found the authors to be not thorough but also very detailed. I also found that the material, while complex and highly technical, to written to a level that is intermediate rather to than advanced or expert level.

One thing I notice was the book covers the written and lab exams, this is the first book I have seen like this. As it comes with several labs to practice with and hundreds of practice questions you have what appears to be a complete study guide.

I found that Chapter 8, especially the CIDR and VLSM, explanations were very well explained and it cleared up a couple of questions for me. The cd, as with other Sybex books, has the e-book and practice exams included. Overall I think this a one to look at for those going or the CCIE R&S certification.

Summary: Good Overview
Review: I agree with the majority of the reviews here. The CCIE written is a test which assumes a reasonably strong command of general routing and switching topics. If you look at this book from that perspective, it provides a fairly thorough "checklist" of topics to review. If you have the experience Cisco expects going into the CCIE written, this book should provide a studying framework which will enable you to pass. If you are light on the experience side and need to refresh yourself on specifics, you will definitely need to read several additional books to be adequately prepared. I personally would recommend the Cisco Press CCNP books.

I gave the book four stars because it is one of the better books on the market at this point in time. However, future revisions will need to correct the errors and enhance topic depth to remain competitive.

Summary: Errors
Review: I agree with the other reviewers here that the book is well written, gives good coverage of most topics, but overall is a little light technically on some things.

The chapter on BGP was quite technical, though, and I appreciated that. I'm used to reading full-length RFC's (i.e., I've read the ones on the original TCP/IP protocol and such additional topics as DHCP, and so forth, and I can tell you from personal experience, they can be quite quite dense).

I should mention that I'm a long-time server administrator side person and am currently retired at the ripe old age of 50. When I was working, I really don't need to know that much about Cisco products, since I worked for a big Fortune 100 company and we had whole departments of people handling that side of things, just as I was responsible for the server side of things. But as I now have plenty of time on my hands, I'm currently working through all the books for the CCNA, CCNP, and CCIE that I can find in order to just get somemore background in these important areas, mainly for my own curiousity. Who knows, maybe I'll even take some of the exams. (If the stock market keeps going down, I may have to go back to work anyway!)

The Cisco books and the Sybex books have been my main resource for all of this. I agree that you need to have other sources for adequate coverage, and I found that sometimes one author's explanation of something didn't click right away, but then the next author's would.

I'm also currently working through the Sybex Switches book, and have found the Cisco Interactive Mentor CD on Switches to be useful also. The CD has interactive labs where you get practice working with the commands and troubleshooting and there is a glossary of technical terms where you can quickly look up something you've forgotten. I don't know if there's one for the CCIE Internetwork exam, but if there is, it might be worth checking out as another study aid.

Summary: Check the Blueprint for R&S Written
Review: i read this book and just faild the new ccie written exam, no matter this is a good book, also there are a lot of mistakes in it, it is worth reading it! But don't feel prepared to take the new ccie written test.

Rating: 4 stars
Summary: The Best I've Read
Review: It's the best CCIE written book I've read. I passed the exam today and I believe I could have passed it with just this book. I used multiple sources to cover myself, but if you had to send me into battle with just one book, this would be the one.

It is well written and easy to understand. The author understands his audience. He writes as if he wants you to learn the material. I can't tell you how many times I've read a CCIE level book where the author seems to speak from a pulpit. Not here.

It gets four stars, not five, because there were a few times (very few) where I wanted to know a subject in depth, and there was just a paragraph or two.

Summary: Very good and dependable material !!
Review: There is not that many books out there that covers the extensive topic of qualifying for the CCIE written.
This book is well written for readers to know all the topics involve in the exam.
With this reference and a combined additional resources from author like Jeff Doyle , Cisco press and Cisco technology page you'll definitely pass.
Great work John S. .

Summary: Use this book along with others
Review: This book does an excellent job of laying down a foundation for the CCIE candidate to build on. Many books out there go into so much detail, they're overwhelming. This book covers the basics, and hints at more. One word of warning: there are a few errors in the sample questions, and DEFINITELY double-check the section on RIF's. All in all, I found this book useful, and I passed the Written by reading it and cross-referencing a few other books.

Rating: 3 stars
Summary: This book is not an accurate all in one source
Review: This book is only good for a cursory review of the topics. The book seems light in detail and has lots of errors. As a general starter read this book a couple of times and then delve into the recommend reading lists and web pages at CCO. That amount of info will help you pass the written. I just passed the CCIE written today and only used this book as my first study resource but not my last!!!. It is an easy read and the BGP chapter only seemed to have the most depth. The tests also have errors. With a little more work, depth and accuracy this book has the potential to be your all in one source for the exam. The next edition may be better as an all in one reference, so supplement your studies with other material!! Good luck all.

Summary: CCIE written just passed today
Review: Unlike others who used this book to start with, I used it as my last study aid. The thing about this book that I found most useful was this: if you understand the underlying material well then the topics presented in this book are indeed a good review; If you don't understand the material then the review will not make sense and that is a good sign that you need to study that area more intensly. To paraphrase others, this should be one of your study materials, but not the only one.
Oh, BTW I did pass the written test today!
