Rating: Summary: Bailed me out when other, more expensive books came up empty Review: I'm a small-town computer consultant, so I'm expected to know everthing about everything. I don't (none of us do, regardless how we may pretend to, but that's another story...). I bought this book a couple of months ago and without reading it first, stuck it in the bag I carry when I visit clients with problems; the one with small tools, a can of compressed air, spare plugs and jacks, flashlight, extension cords, a bunch of boot disks, diskettes with misecellaneous drivers, CD-ROMs with assorted OSes, etc. Yesterday a regular client, a small, specialized software developer, called me with a serious problem with the Win95 registry on his development machine. Furthermore, he was facing a shipping deadline. The problem sounded like one I had never seen before (it was), and I thought maybe I should take along some books about Windows -- THICK books. We struggled with the problem together. I pulled out the thick books, and we looked in vain for the problem we were facing. About an hour in, while we were waiting for something to load (which didn't), I picked up WinRef rather than admit that I didn't have any more ideas. To get to the point, WinRef had THE answer -- and NONE of the thick $40 - $60 books did!! Furthermore, it was incredibly concise -- no need to read a whole chapter when you're on the hotseat just to start figuring out what to do next. My client was thoroughly impressed and plans to order a copy himself. He was really impressed that I knew that such a book existed, and that didn't hurt either. WinRef, you did it for me: real world, real problem, real client, real success. For that you get five stars!! The only problem I found is that the binding is now starting to give out and I may have to order another copy. For this price I'd be a fool not to!!
