Rating: Summary: Outstanding coverage of SONET/SDH applications Review: "Understanding SONET/SDH : Standards and Applications" provides an in-depth coverage of this rapidly expanding field of telecommunications. The material is presented in a manner that is easy to follow, yet provides sufficient detail to serve as a reference for basic network design and implementation. Being involved in telecommunications system engineering activities, I frequently use this book to supplement documents published by ITU and other standards organizations. In addition to a comprehensive presentation of SONET/SDH theory, the author also provides numerous examples of how these concepts are applied in the field environment. If you are a network planner, design engineer, marketing representative, or student, this book should certainly be part of your personal telecommunications library.
Rating: Summary: Excellent Book Review: But for the editing, the book provides an excellent learning experience for readers of all backgrounds.
Rating: Summary: Great Informative book Review: I like this book because it got good explanation of the ring network and overhead bytes that I am trying to understand from the other books I got. It also has a good explanation of SDH which we use here in Australia.
Rating: Summary: A "Must Have" ATM Reference Book Review: I really did not get much out of this book. There is a lot of information but it is very poorly explained. Even simple concepts are presented in a very complicated way. It looks as if the author took a presentation and cut&paste it into a book. I am sorry I bought this book.
Rating: Summary: A reasonable text to understand SONET Review: Ignoring the grammatical/syntactical errors and inconsistent line tabulations. I feel this is a fairly reasonable book to understand the structure of SONET. He does a satisfactory job in explaining how SONET data is constructed from the PDH structure. I like the fact that he at times repeats the essential details which helped me remember them and not have to refer to earlier pages. I felt at times he could have done more to explain certain points n more detail; e.g how does positive/negative frequency justification affect the design and buffer threshold. He does not explain how the data (email/telephone/fax) fetches its way across to its destination. I just got the basic awareness of SONET and will have to read other books to get a complete picture.
Rating: Summary: Want to understand SONET - buy this Review: It is ironic that a book that is dedicated to clarifying a communications standard has failed to use the communications standard in which it was written: the English language. I realize that the author is not a native English speaker and do not fault him for it. But he should have had this book proof read and edited for English before publishing. There is no question that the author understands the technology. But the English is bad beyond the point of being simply annoying: it often obscures the author's meaning. His analogies are confusing at best and his explanations are often self referential or incomplete. If you are the type of engineer who can learn from diagrams and charts, you may find this work useful. But then why not just read the standards documentation directly? If you require more in-depth explanation and clarification of the subject, this text is an exercise in frustration. If the author addresses these faults and publishes a second edition this could be an excellent text. Unfortunately since the audience for this type of text is so small I find it unlikely that a second edition will follow.
Rating: Summary: One of the worst book I've ever read Review: The book is poorly organized. It contains a lot of sentences like "discussed earlier", "to be discussed in detail next", etc. This book is poorly written. Even if you know the subject, you still cannot understand what the author is trying to say. If you don't know the subject, you won't get a single clue by reading the author's explanation. I would put "0" star for this book if I could do it. I really feel sorry to waste my money on this book.
Rating: Summary: A "Must Have" ATM Reference Book Review: This book provides comprehensive coverage of a very complex subject. The material is well organized, has numerous illustrations, and presents technical concepts in an easy to understand format. Although the grammar could be improved, there were no technical errors or misleading descriptions. All things considered, this text is a worthy addition to any technical library.
Rating: Summary: Excellent book Review: Very well written book. Excellent book for those who have a desire or need to learn SONET/SDH and applications in detail. All you need to do is to read it - author gives you everything you need to know to thoroughly understand presented material. The author takes a reader to a journey to explore SONET from every side. One does not need to have background or experience in order to understand the concepts and details. Author presents the material in a very clear and comprehensive matter, giving detailed, step-by-step explanations and examples, yet providing necessary background for those who may have lack of it. The figures/pictures are well explained so that the reader is certain of their meaning. The book is written in a very professional and structured way. Each chapter has a list of objectives that author sets for to reader to accomplish after completing the chapter. Then a brief outline is provided, followed by description of various concepts from high level to the very low level. Book is good for those who need to know things 5000 km above the Earth, and even better for those who need to explore the depths of the ocean. It is very informative. Readers from different backgrounds will find everything they need to know about SONET/SDH in a very easy to understand matter. Book is full of examples and detailed explanations. At the end of each chapter there is a list of review questions, so that the reader can check him/herself with the answer key included at the end of the book. Moreover the author includes the list of the abbreviations and acronyms, so the reader can have everything in one book. The author did an excellent job of putting together a very complex topic in a very easy to understand language. In summary, I would highly recommend this book for any body who wishes to learn SONET/SDH. It is a great reference book as well. It would also serve very well as an excellent textbook for a SONET class. Very well done.
