Summary: Dummies Review
Review: Before this book, I've never touched VB and I was a little skepctical about learning it. However, Wallace and his witty explanations were exactly what I needed. I'm now programming in College, and I still go back to this book when I want a refresher course, or a quick reference. I'll recommend this book to anyone learning to program.

Rating: 4 stars
Summary: Great starter and reference.
Review: Easy reading that covers all the basics. I constantly refer back to the book when I need a refresher on the fundamentals. For the perfect combiniation, add this and "More Visual Basic for Dummies" to your library.

Summary: Not too bad but could be better
Review: I read this books thinking I was going to learn VB5 programming. I was wrong. It didnt show me that much. It just showed me the very basics, it didn't go beyond that. A lot of the humor the author used was stupid and silly and it was often repeated way too many times. Some of the questions for the quizzes and tests were very stupid or better yet too easy so you could just pick what seems right and it wouldn't teach you anything if it's easy. This book along with other VB5 for Windows books taught me the bare basics so I could go on and read other stuff about VB5. After you read these books, you might want to take a look into VB5 From the Ground Up, VB5 in 21 Days, and Mastering VB5 ( excellent reference).

Summary: Definitely for the beginner
Review: This book could have been written in 120 pages or less. (It's 464 pages). Either the writer was getting paid by the word or he was aiming at an audience with a very low IQ. (It seems the author really took the "for Dummies" part of the title of his book to heart.) If you like to spend your time wading through detailed explanations of very obvious stuff then you'll appreciate this book. (Of course, he doesn't even mention the not so obvious stuff.) I guess the book is better than nothing - but not by much. It's torture searching for the one or two bits of usable information per page the author sprinkles throughout his innocuous prose. In fairness though, I guess I was trying to use it as a reference manual. A reference manual it's not - so if you have any programming experience at all, better buy a different book. Most aggrevating to me was the fact that the auther didn't mention 'arrays' at all. I was beginning to think VB5 didn't support arrays - How weak! - until I researched that question on the net. Here's an example of how inexperienced the author assumes his average reader to be. The following was taken from his chapter on Arithmetic Operators. He writes:

X = 10
Y = 15.4
SUM = X + Y

1. The first command says, "Create a variable called X and set the value of X to 10."

2. The second command says, "Create a variable called Y and set the value of Y to 15.4."

3. etc.... ad nauseum

If you find this level of explanation enlightening, then you and this book are a match, otherwise, do yourself a favor and buy some other book.

Summary: A book for Good Coding Details
Review: This book is great for beginners and helps intermediate BASIC programmers to convert from QuickBasic to VB. I agree with the previous reviewers. Perhaps the lads from England didn't appreciate the American Humor, but I enjoyed it and got a good chuckle several times. The book covers coding details well. It compares well with the old interpreted Basic manual supplied by IBM, but with better examples, good explanations and a friendlier style.

I used it to refresh myself on some old BASIC techniques: strings, loops, user interfaces, procedures. Highly recommended.

Summary: A must read for beginners!
Review: This is the book I started with and moved on to become a very good VB Programmer, One thing about this book people don't like is it just contains the basics, I loved that though, I totally understood what I was doing. What each line of code meant. When I finished this Book I Moved On To Bigger Books which with this Backround I had no trouble with whatsoever, The Humor was great, I think people who look down on it are ignorant. I don't mean to be rude. You just have to have a sense of humor. If you are just beginning with no experiance at all in programming, BUY THIS BOOK!

Summary: Perfect for a complete novice
Review: When I started reading this book, I knew nothing about Visual Basic or programming. It was easy to read and maintained my interest long enough to follow the examples. It was a lot of fun and I'm looking foward to trying a more difficult book.
