Review: Excellent book. very well informed and very easy to read...Made the mundane job of learning about unix, a pleasureable experience.After reading this, you shouldn't need any other book to learn about the unix system! Highly Recommendable to both novice and intermediate users.

Summary: I Still Use It! 5 Years Later!
Review: I bought this book in '95 when it first came out and I needed to learn UNIX for my job. I was able to self-teach myself using the book and a shell account our sys adm guy set up for me. My only background before this was DOS. Today I still refer to the book even now and I recommend it to anyone trying to get a handle on files, script files, vi and all those other funs parts of UNIX.

Summary: Funny, readable, and informative
Review: i first got this book at a used store, but then i moved out of state, so i bought it again. it taught me so much that i gave it to a friend when i moved back. i loved it, so i bought it again, and now have lent it to a friend. i just now ordered another copy for a friend who is unfamiliar with _all_ computing. i built her a linux box, and many of the commands are similar. this book is really interesting. it is not so dry like other unix manuels, so you'll enjoy reading it. there are parts that are funny while they are teaching you things.i have and will reccommend this book to anyone and everyone i know who is starting out on unix and linux because it is filled with information you wouldn't notice in a regular unix book because of the boring manuel type style of writing. it is definately a good read, for all levels of users.

Summary: "Irreverent" and "Unix" in the same sentence??
Review: Remember that goofball teacher you had in high school? The one who got his points across in the middle of corny jokes? This book is like that. The style is fun to read, and the humor is unforced. I picked up quite a few tricks about shells and Unix. I bought an EMACS book 5 years ago; it's still unread, because it's so dry. I consumed this book in 4-5 sittings because I was entertained. The hilarious title and front cover alone make this a good conversation piece for your cubicle.

Summary: Informative and readable.
Review: This book is great for those who know just enough UNIX to get screwed up, but not enough to get unscrewed all the time. The author's writing style is easy to understand and he closed a lot of the holes I had in my knowledge of UNIX. I wish more technical books were written with this much knowledge and wit.

Summary: good book if you want to learn more
Review: This is a great book for intermediate users. So many useful tips that can save you a lot of time. The writer chose C shell as the primary shell for examples. But he didn't forget about korn shell. That's good for people like me who use bash on Linux. The only thing I don't like is the writer's attitude towards vi editor. However, his humor really makes this book easy to read. Get this book and you won't regret it.

UNIX masters may find few new tricks here, but it's a great book for the enthusiastic novice. The worst danger of reading this book is that you'll get sucked into a chapter other than the one you need to get an answer out of because something funny caught your eye.
