Summary: turn a site into a web APPLICATION... start with this book!
Review: Active Server Pages technology rocks! This is the easiest way to harness web database power. Turn your clients' web sites into interactive WEB APPLICATIONS today. Learn how to easily use built-in web server objects to pass data between your web pages, and to and from your server using Request, Response, Application, and Session. Discover the global.asa file which maintains your application & session objects. Learn about the built-in server component for database support, ADO, and its Connection & RecordSet objects. Brush up on your SQL commands so that you can customize your database queries. I went from non-programmer to intermediate-level ASP developer in less than a month. Find an ISP that hosts the IIS or chiliSoft ASP web server, and read these great books to learn how to get your Web APPLICATION up & running this week: ASP for Dummies --> Beginning ASP 2.0 --> Professional ASP 2.0 and ADO 2.0.

Summary: Great reference, but lacking in some areas
Review: I do a ton of ASP programming, and this book is definitely a great help. Their examples and code blocks have come in helpful more times than I can imagine. Cookies are explained well, and the various database techniques were quick and easy to put into action.

On the downside, there are NUMEROUS errors in the code and in the book itself that make it slightly annoying at times. The solution is to simply mark the book up as you go, so you don't make the same mistake twice (or lend the book and inflict the mistake on someone else).

Also on the downside, the book doesn't have an easy to use reference section that lays out all options on all of the standard ASP commands you're likely to use. Instead, you have to track down the commands in context and hope it lists what you want to do with a given command. There have been many times that I've sat there guessing at parameters because it doesn't tell me exactly what I needed to know. This definitely can't be the only ASP book you keep by your computer.

If you're new to ASP though, this is a great introduction and something to get you started out.

Summary: A great book for anyone with little to no ASP knowledge
Review: I found this book to be the best beginners ASP book I have come across. I tried the SAM'S series first (i.e. Active Server Pages 2.0 in 24 hrs and 21 days respectively) I found these books to have too many coding errors and not being able to properly route you to an ASP environment. This book on the other hand did a great job of telling you what you needed to run ASP on your laptop/desktop, and how to find it. My personal suggestion is that if you have the means of downloading PWS 4.0 from a network do so, because the download takes forever otherwise. I found the example programs to be pretty much on the mark. I would also suggest downloading HomePage 4.0 from Allaire, it is an excellent HTML editor. The book tells you how to go about downloading HomePage as well. I have had a lot to say about this book because it is just that good, the authors do a fantastic job of explaining how each part of the code works. Some other readers may have found this repetitive, but with limited HTML and no ASP experience, I found it to be a God sent.

Summary: Must Read
Review: If you are a beginner, or simply need a refresher course on ASP this is the book for you. The authors give straight forward examples that effectively bring the power of ASP to you.

WROX has established itself as a force to be reckoned with in recent years. I wish all of their books were only half as good as this one.

Summary: Good Companion to Beginning ASP Databases
Review: Makes a great companion manual to Beginning ASP Databases. What is missing in one is available in the other and vice versa.

Rating: 4 stars
Summary: Probably the classic "intro to ASP" book
Review: My copy of this book is completely worn out. As a senior developer at a dot com, I have lent out my copy to over 10 juniors when asked by them which book they should read to get started with ASP.

This is after I myself have dogeared it, underlined it, etc. It's a great beginning book because it knows its target audience well, and caters to it. As such, it's great for the beginning to intermediate programmer of not just ASP, but also to those rather unfamiliar of client server and Microsoft DNA. SO it may be a little slowgoing for those who are already VB experts and have expereince with another similar technology (e.g. CFML, JSP).

However, for those who are NOT experts, this book is very readable and illlustrates learning ASP with as much wit as a memorable college intro to programming course.

Covers good ground as has some good reference projects.

I would have liked a CD-ROM with the book though.

It's such a great book 4.5 stars, really...

Summary: Excellent book for beginners
Review: This book is an excellent introduction and reference for people interested in learning ASP and getting started in web development beyond simple HTML. Included is a great introduction to the ins and outs of web scripting, the fundamentals of client-server methodology, and ADO.

However, if you have ANY programming, client/server, or web scripting experience, this is not the book for you. This is especially true if you have experience in Visual Basic--so much of the VBScript language covered (exclusively) in this book is practically identical to Visual Basic. If this describes you, go straight to Beginning ASP Databases or Professional Active Server Pages 2.0 or Professional Visual Basic 6 Web Programming, depending on your specific needs.

Summary: Excellent for ASP beginner
Review: This book is great source to learn ASP especially because there are a lot of examples you can try. Last chapter is real world example, a classifieds. Explanation on codes is very clear that you won't get lost. All the sample codes are available through Wrox's web site. After go through this book, you will feel you can create your own web application.

Summary: Very good Introduction to ASP
Review: This book is very good for getting into the development of Active Server Pages. I would certainly recommend it if you haven't upgraded your box to 2000 yet(3.0 in that case). The topics covered inside (All four of the major objects) are explained simply and will get you up and running in no time. Definately a must have for beginners.

Rating: 3 stars
Summary: Buy Beginning Active Server Pages 3.0 Instead
Review: This book should be replaced with Beginning Active Server Pages 3.0 which would receive 5 stars from me. ASP 2.0 is old news now.
