Summary: Phenominally detailed view of the Java 2 language!
Review: As the person who was in charge for implementing the switch from Pascal to Java, I would like to personally thank the Deitels for their erudite scholarship and writing. Their book and multimedia package in my mind (this review is personal opinion and cannot be construed as an official opinion of department, school nor university) is the solution to the problem of the Java language training. I can personally attest to individual students who told me that their grades improved from a C to a B because they listened to my advice and reviewed lectures using the multimedia CD-rom. I was amazed at how EVERYONE that I saw brought their book to class and we had a lecture hall of 164 students (times three!). Java appears daunting to many at first but with Deitel & Deitel in the classroom, everything becomes manageable.

Summary: Teaching & Learning with Deitel's Java 2
Review: Deitel & Deitel's elegant format combined with comprehensive coverage of most OOP programming topics is unmatched. Their Java 2 with Swing book is not only the first, but probabaly the best for quite some time. All code snippets are accurate and work seamlessly with Inprise's JBuilder 3 IDE. The recent release of the associated "Cyber Classroom" CD-ROM is an awesome interactive traing tool that works well, especially with independent learners. I also use it with an overhead projection system in the classroom to facilitate student involvemnet.

Summary: Great preparation for Java Certification
Review: I have no connection whatsoever with the author or the publisher. This book is probably the finest tutorial I've ever seen. The writing style is superb and the content is very well thought out. Every concept is thoroughly and clearly explained. Every concept is accompanied with generous amounts of runnable code, not just snippets. What a pleasure it is to simply click an icon in the multimedia tutorial and immediately start interacting with the program you just studied. Unlike many computer experts, the authors are obviously well-steeped in not only Java but advanced educational methods as well. Your learning is constantly reinforced with tons of helpful tips, warnings, summaries, quizzes, and exercises. My only minor quibble was the sub-standard technical support I received when I had problems using the code with my pre-existing Java 1.3 SDK installation. I was able to resolve the problem, however, and the code ran perfectly thereafter. This book was a big help in helping me pass my Java 2 Programmers Certification exam. Having no previous experience with Java, I worked my way through the first 17 chapters so that I became quite comfortable with the essential aspects of Java. Then I switched to Robert's The Complete Java 2 Certification Guide so I could concentrate on the test-specific topics. The whole process took about 3 months @ 4 hours of study per day. Now that I'm certified, I will definitely revisit this text so that I can complete the exercises and chapters that I had skipped. Bravo, Harvey and Paul Deitel.

Summary: Excellent but...
Review: I would highly recommend the training courses offered by the Deitels. So far, I have used the Java and Perl Training Courses and have found with both that the instruction was consistent and well planned. The examples were done well and the explanations provided in both the book and especially on the CD were easy to follow and understand. I think particularly listening to the CD explanations made working through the material go a lot faster, at least for me.

I believe that the Deitels have made every effort to make a product that truly is an effective learning tool. They also pleasantly surprised me by promptly answering any emails that I sent to them regarding questions I had about the material in the book.

I feel confident that because of the Deitels' products I have gained a solid foundation in both the Java and Perl programming languages. For any and all programming languages I plan to learn in the future, I will check first to see if there is a Deitel training course available and start my learning process there.

Summary: Excellent but...
Review: the authors fail to provide basic, detailed step by step instructions on how to install the JRE AND JDK on different platforms. A leaflet with environment settings like "clobbering" with "SET CLASSPATH=" and basic PATH editing should be added to the package.

AFTER you get over those hurdles you have the golden key to a fantastic book!

Get this book for Java!

Summary: Great Teaching tool!
Review: The book "Java 2 How to Program", is an excellent book for teaching and learning Java 2 programming. I use this book to teach a Java Course both at work and to our local users group. I found it's use of practical instructions, live code snippets, and pratical examples to be very useful in bringing Visual Basic, Delphi, and Cobol programmers into the world of Java!

In addition, "C++, How to Program" is also an excellent teaching tool as well.

Great job Deitel!

Summary: Fantastic!
Review: This is how the technical book these days should be written. It has billions of examples and a very good tutorial. Since you get Book + Multimedia Material for 70 bucks this is just great deal. Wrox's Java1.2 is pretty good too, but I tend to use this one 90% of time. I wasn't new to Java but I really enjoyed it. For more dedtailed tech stuff I recommend JSP from O'Reilly, Core Servlets from Sun.It looks like logical step forward.
