Summary: yes, it's good
Review: all the editorials written for this book lives up to the knowledge the book offers, but i STILL think photoshop 6 wow! book is better.

yes, this is damn good book, but if you can't afford too many "COOKBOOKS", just get the WOW! book; it has more info, more comprehensive... and is the ORIGINAL COOKBOOK.

Review: Great tricks. But my really old Adobe Photoshop 3 Wow book had double the tricks and thorough explanations on how to achieve them.
My biggest complaint: The book gives you few clues on how they made the trick.
I tried the first trick. Because the book fails to give much explanation, you have to hunt and peck on your own. After a few days of this, you have your friends try it. Over the weeks, the two of you finally figure out what the hell they did! And it has little to do with what the book said.
Next I tried the second 'trick' in the book:. Same routine, only this time I never could figure it out.
So my friends - Why does it suck so bad?
For example: It fails to tell you what size to make anything; where you can find the sequence of options used; what font, typeface, size, leading, antialiasing, resolution, what options are set; on and on.
After trying to work two of their tricks, IM GOING BACK TO MY REAL OLD PHOTOSHOP 3 WOW! BOOK!
Last thoughts: I am very sorry for you if you bought this already. I can feel your pain. If you like the tricks in there, then go and examine the latest edition of the Down and Dirty Tricks -- I think it is Photoshop 7 Down and Dirty. It is about twice as thick because the editor apparently figured out that you have carefully construct explanations if you are trying to teach something technical. AFTER ALL - I CAN'T READ THE WRITERS MIND! Furthermore, after consulting my Photoshop 3 Wow book over some of the same Down and Dirty 'tricks', I'm convinced the writer has made several errors in the book! That and the fact that to get the first trick, two of us had to do several things different from the book to get it to work!
Scott Kelby & New Riders: I don't care whether your newer editions are better -- IM NEVER GOING TO DO BUSINESS WITH YOU! YOU SCREWED ME OVER!

Summary: Good stuff
Review: I got Photoshop 6 Down and Dirty Tricks at the COMDEX 2002 show in Chicago a little over two weeks ago. I don't think I've put it down since then! I use PH all the time with FrontPage 2002 to boost FP's capabilities, and let me tell you, I'm looking like a PHAT (read:kewl) Web Designer thanks to Scott Kelby! I intend on subscribing to PH Users Mag, not to mention preordering PH 7 Down and Dirty Tricks! I can't wait to see what he comes up with next. Scott has made it possible for People like me working for certification and learning products to make kewl Web sites! Thanks, Scott!

Review: Photoshop 6, Down and Dirty Tricks AUTHOR: Scott Kelby PUBLISHER: New Riders REVIEWED BY: Barbara Rhoades

BOOK REVIEW: Scott Kelby writes this wonderful tips and tricks book with a sense of humor. Not only do you learn the tricks but, the humor helps you remember them. With 12 chapters of how-to's, you will learn drop shadows, type, rust, marble metal and chrome effects, changing colors in photos, gradients, tinting, adding motion, page curls, 3D, web buttons and even how to create a star field. There is even a whole chapter especially designed for web use.

Down and Dirty Tricks contains plenty of pictures so you can see exactly what each step should look like and, of course, it is all in vibrant color. A four-page index and table of contents makes it easy to locate the particular trick for which you are looking. The book contains slightly over 200 pages that allows you to learn quickly and start using the tips/tricks right away.

For anyone struggling to learn Photoshop or those who know the program but want a few easy tricks, Photoshop 6, Down and Dirty Tricks, is the very book to buy. This book is one that every graphic library should contain.

Summary: Down & Dirty is Down to Earth
Review: The author Scott Kelby certainly knows how to be down to earth in his Down & Dirty Tricks book. I found his style to be simple enough for the occasional photoshop user as well as time saving tips for the professional needing to meet tight deadlines and please a variety of clients. What impressed me most was the abundance of helpful tips on a wide range of subjects and the step by step approach found through-out the book. I found the sections on drop shadow effects and working with type especially helpful to me in order to satisfy my clients' needs that have a limited budget but still need incredible looking pieces. I enjoyed the overall layout of the book and the fact that it showed you color results of what you are looking to achieve. I would highly recommend this book to the beginner as well as the professional looking to always expand his knowledge, surely this book will do that for them; and at a price both could afford. Out of all the books I own about photoshop, this one will certainly NOT grow dust!

Summary: You don't have to know the whole program
Review: This book allowed me to make things with Photoshop 6 even though I did not understand the whole program. Also introduced me to some of the features so I could use them later.

Summary: Almost too good.
Review: This book explains so many amazing techniques, I want to hide every copy that I can find at the bookstores. The only thing I don't get is Scott Kelby's misunderstanding of how things reflect. Scott needs to take some photographs of actual reflected objects and take some notes. Other than that, this is my absolute favorite Photoshop book out of 3 that I own. By the way, Photoshop 7 Down & Dirty Tricks has almost all new tricks. Seriously worth a look.

Summary: Just say "NO" Newer editions - 'Maybe'
Review: Using this book I learned how to create impressive metal and liquid lettering effects to enhance stunning ads for my archery manufacturing company!

Kelby provides simple instructions that teach you the keyboard shortcuts that will speed your graphic design. His ideas are great for magazine and web design.

Thanks for the help!
