Summary: A Compact Guide to the Oracle 8 Server
Review: As with any good technical book this one ranks high on style of presentation and language. All the concepts have been explained clearly which encourages me to get on with the chapters without getting bogged down in minute details. However I felt that the author could have dealt with some topics in greater detail or have provided a quiz at the end of each chapter to test the understanding and recall of the reader.Such features add value to the book improving its utility. It is very useful for anybody who is keen on getting started with Oracle. It gives you the essence of Server Concepts without demoralising you.

Summary: Oracle8 features not architecture
Review: I bought this book based on the title and expected the architecture to be revealed. BAD ASSUMPTION - this book does a nice job of presenting the feature set of Oracle8, but I could read about Oracle8's features for free. I didn't have to waste my money on this book.

If you want to know about Oracle architecture, buy the Rama Velpuri book on backup and recovery or the Steve Adams book on Internal Services.

Summary: Good book but very basic...
Review: I use this book as a first step reference to jog my memory and it is great for that use. However, it lacks the depth to get to the heart of most Oracle issues. It's almost too conceptual because it invariably stops short of the specific detail I'm seeking. Often the books containing the in-depth information lack a good beginning point and that's where this book is helpful. Am I glad to have the book? Sure, it has come in handy a few times. Would I get it again? Good question....

Summary: Understanding why
Review: This book gives an excellent overview of the Oracle8 engine. While it does not get into the "how-tos" required for DBAs, it is great for for those DBAs experienced with other databases (Informix, Sybase, etc.) who are now learning Oracle8. Read this book first, then go on to the more specialized Oracle books.

Summary: Pieces it all together
Review: This book pieces everything together in Oracle & why it gives no concrete (hence the theoretical below) queries, you will understand Oracle very well. You can then get some other book to give you the hands on you will need.
