Summary: WordPerfect for Smarties
Review: Laura Acklen's "Absolute Beginner's Guide" books are crafted in rare clarity by a teacher that understands the learning process. She starts with two assumptions. One, you are somewhat familiar with Windows, and two, those yellow books are *not* calling your name!

Each chapter begins with "In This Chapter" learning goals. You are introduced to basic features and those "wow, it can do that!" features in a mix that keeps your interest while you become grounded in the essentials. The chapters end with a companion "The Absolute Minimum" summary that allows you to decide if you're ready to move on.

The "Absolute Beginner's Guide to WordPerfect" accomplishes seemingly disparate goals. In addition to learning from the beginning, it serves the experienced user as a refresher course, and the Microsoft Word user gets converted to a much more complete program. After you have completed it, the book cover will get curly corners as it serves as a handy reference right between your keyboard and your coffee mug.

Summary: Excellent reference for beginners
Review: This book is well-written and very easy to follow. It is a comprehensive learning tool for those new to WordPerfect, presenting material in a way that will make the learning curve much less steep.

I only wish books like this had been around when I first started learning word processing, twenty years ago. (Most software manuals then were written by the same people who coded the programs, and most of those had few of the skills that are evident in Laura's books.)

When you finish "Absolute Beginner's Guide to WordPerfect 12" you should have learned enough to advance from "Beginner" to "Intermediate" status!
