Rating: Summary: The Ends Justify the Means Review: Machiavelli creates principles to which a Princedom should be run which will enable the Prince to be strong in this reign that rival those of the THE ART OF WAR. He covers the state in which a Prince reigns such as that of acquiring new territory and the characteristics of which a Prince should follow if the Prince wishes to remain in power. Machiavelli also outlines the type of arms a Prince should inquire in defending his citizens or in attack of another ruler. Machiavelli covers Italy's current political position of when he was living their and how its faults happened how it can be remedied. Under all his points he leaves the message, that no matter how you came into power, use it wisely and good fortune will be bestoed on you or that the ends justify the means. I recommend that anyone who wishes to get into the mind of a political and military master mind or just someone looking for a thought provocing book should read this because it is not to be taken lightly. Although he is writing of political positions in the 1500s most of the points he makes can still be useful today however not all because of the invention of chemical and nuclear warfare and internet which has opened the world into a new dimension.
Rating: Summary: "The Prince" A classic masterpiece! Review: Machiavelli's "The Prince" is the most realistic and accurate blueprint on how to obtain and hold the influence of power, whether it be through one's own natural ability, through the fortune of others, or through attrition and deception. I found it truly ironic that Machiavelli wrote this passage after he had been removed from his political position, and exiled to his farm that was left to him by his father. It is useful reading for anyone who has ever thought of entering the political field, or any other form of leadership. Machiavelli's perfect leader would be a person who would willing to gain power through any means necessary. The leader would also be able to effectively decide what type of leadership should be applied no matter what the situation may be. To Machiavelli, "The end; justified the means". As the translator, Daniel Donno said, "The prince he envisioned would be unencumbered by ordinary ethical and moral values; his prince would be man and beast, fox and lion". Furthermore, Machiavelli goes on to state that the perfect situation for a leader to be in is to be loved and feared at the same time. Although this is a rare occurence, Machiavelli goes on to state that it is much better to be feared as a leader, then loved. In conclusion, Machiavelli's "The Prince" is a sixteenth century masterpiece that is as true today, as it was when it was written back in the early fifteen hundreds. I would recommend this book to anyone who was considering a career in politics, leadership, as well as the common everyday person. Not only does his writing explain to you what traits are essential and necessary to become an effective and efficient leader, it also shows the everyday person what traits to watch our for and to expect from a leader as well.
Rating: Summary: Great book Review: People so twisted, disturbed and lonely as to use a book review as yet another excuse to lash out at a man who left office four years ago, even though the book has nothing to do with that man, may not be Machiavellian ... but they sure are pathetic. One wonders how their life got to be this empty.
Rating: Summary: Enduring classic Review: Required reading at many Universities and Business Schools, The Prince is a classic. People the world over continue to show an enduring fascination for Machiavelli, some five hundred years after his death. Equally applicable to political science and business alike, this book is highly recommended for all readers.Machiavelli's principles, conveyed through The Prince, are timeless; they address a side of human nature not often stated explicitly. By no means 'politically correct,' these principles touch the base emotions and desires of politics and everyday life. While greedy and evil as judged by many of today's cultural norms, the eloquent logic and sound arguments contained within The Prince are captivating. The fascination with Machiavelli is likely to endure for centuries to come. In today's increasingly competitive and global economic climate, the CEOs of large corporations in many ways face the situation found in Italy in the 16th century. As the fervent wave of large mergers and acquisitions continues, Machiavelli's principles become that much more applicable. A "Prince" or the manager of a new company may also find the advice contained within The Prince very useful, however 'politically incorrect' this advice may be in today's world.
