Rating: Summary: Awesome detail. Likely scenarios. Good preparation. Review: If society collapses, as the book portends, then survival will depend on thinking 'one step ahead' of the brigands. This book shows the likely adversaries, how they will operate, and how a survivor can outwit them. There is much more, too. It will definitely make you rethink your preparations.
Rating: Summary: Read it if you love freedom and refuse to be helpless! Review: This is an excellent book. It is about standing up for what you believe in, having control over your life, and upholding America. This novel describes bad stuff in the near future, but in such a way that you can prepare for it now. You will probably find yourself writing things down or dog-earing many pages. If you don't want to have to go spend the night in a high school auditorium waiting in line for your spoonful of soup along with everyone else after a disaster, then read this book! It will give you a great start in preparing and acheiving the attitude to survive major disasters.
Rating: Summary: Good for the informed! Not your "starter" Y2k book though! Review: This book is actually two books in one. It is an adventure novel about how one group managed to survive in a "worst case" senario. It is also a fairly complete survival guide for the informed. I do NOT think it should be considered as a "first book to get" to educate yourself about "the Y2K fiasco" but it would be an excellent read for those who are already somewhat informed about the upcoming events and need some extra tips. Wesley-Rawles "waxes" a bit about his ideas and religious beliefs, sometimes somewhat humorously even if unintended. One of his characters is quite religious, or we are led to believe, but seems to have no qualms about leading the "team" to a bloody offensive assault (read slaughter) on some shady "biker thugs", and we see a side that is almost "vengeful". Where's the "Christian attitude" there? I don't know... The book sometimes gets a little far-fetched, the characters all seem a bit too cheerful, unreal at times; a main character slices a nice chunk of tissue from her arm and all she can muster is "fiddlesticks! I wanted to finish my canning.." Come on John, a little too watered down, huh? Oh well, just my opinion. Some more examples can be found but I think I would just be nit-picking... In all, I felt it was a good read, my wife enjoyed it too, though both felt it got a bit too descriptive at times for the "uninitiated". It gave us both a lot to think about, helped us "prepare for the worst but hope for the best"... I give it 4 stars!
Rating: Summary: TWO THUMBS UP "PATRIOTS" Review: MR RAWLES BOOK IS IN THE SAME GENRE AS "ALAS , BABYLON" AND "LUCIFER'S HAMMER",AND IS FAR SUPERIOR IN THE DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF SURVIVALISTIC TRICKS OF THE TRADE. MY FIRST READING OF THIS BOOK WAS FOR ENJOYMENT. (I READ THE BOOK IN 2 SITTINGS) THE NEXT READ THROUGH WILL BE TO HIGHLIGHT IN DEPTH SURVIVAL TOPICS WHICH ARE INCORPORATED INTO THE STORYLINE. THIS IS A "MUST READ" FOR POST APOCALYPTIC FICTION READERS.
Rating: Summary: Great book! Review: I'm on Chapter Two... and the book has already paid for itself in practical ideas for the self-reliant. I can hardly put the book down. It is a novel, but a very, very practical novel.
Rating: Summary: Excellent detail, a real eye opener to what could happen. Review: If you are a fan of paramilitary, survivalism, or the self-sufficiency movement you will love this book. A realistic view of one groups realization and preparation for what could and may happen as we as world citizens continue to live as though nothing really bad could happen. The plot is skillfully woven with useful, and thought provoking details. I have marked many pages for future reference. This is obviously a reflection of the author's own lifestyle and preparations for what might come.
Rating: Summary: Thought provoking Review: A chilling and thought provoking account of the coming collapse of society as we now know it. The author has remarkably included good information from good sources. It is refreshing to read for this reason alone. While I am an agnostic the references to religon are more than palpable and don't take away from the story. Rather they enhance the story and explain some of the motivations of the characters. Additionally the author refers to suppliers that exist and can be contacted if certain items refered to are of interest to the reader. All in all this is a good read that will keep your attention. Tom P.
Rating: Summary: Required reading for the coming Y2K problems..... Review: This book is a must have for every serious minded person preparing for the possible future with Y2K. I have read both of the early drafts of this novel by Mr. Rawles and found it to be very informative and packed full of usefull information. I consider it a must have for every bookshelf. I am very much looking forward to reading this novel again and purchasing extra copies for good friends
Rating: Summary: Excellent and timely information! Review: This is a novel of the breakdown of society. While the focus of this book is an economic meltdown, the information portrayed could equally be applied to wide scale natural disaster, y2k woes, etc. While there are guns in the book, the main emphasis is more on preparing with simple things such as food and medical supplies. A strong humanitarian influence can be felt in the novel, as those characters that prepared in advance for adversity were able to share some of their bounty with the less fortunate. Whether you agree with the author's feelings or not, you can easily see that this "fictional" story is something of a "how to survive" manual portrayed as a fictional story to make it more enjoyable to the average reader. One way or another, a memorable book that will leave you a bit breathless and much more informed. Best regards, John.
Rating: Summary: Do You Think that the Bull Market Won't Last Forever? You Need Review: I'm James Wesley, Rawles, the author of Patriots Surviving the Coming Collapse. It is a novel about a devastating socioeconomic collapse in the near future. It has been described as "a survival manual fairly neatly dressed as fiction." Although it is fast-paced, it includes so many useful details that most people find themselves taking notes as they read it. It doesn't just describe what might happen, it explains exactly how to prepare for it. Most readers comment that they end up time with a highlighting pen in hand. This is not your typical novel. It even has appendices. An early draft edition of the novel was formerly available as shareware, via the Internet. With more than 80,000 downloads, it was by far the most popular novel ever on the Internet. A lot of the feedback from readers of the drafts ended up in the pages of "Patriots". This material gives Patriots and incredibly rich texture. Among others, I received e-mail from a veteran of the French resistance in WWII, a German tank commander, a U.S. Navy SEAL, a South African explosives expert, a midwife, a Swedish HAM radio wizard, and an emergency room doctor in New Zealand. You won't regret getting a copy of Patriots. It will probably be the most important novel that you'll ever read.
