Summary: Beginning Programmer
Review: I am not quite sure what the majority of these reviewers are speaking of. I am the anti-programmer, that is to say I am not particularly inclined to programming, and have not had any difficulty understanding this book. I am not sure if non-technical people are buying this book, when they are looking for an "idiot's" type of book, but as far as technical textbooks go, and I have read and purchased many, it is pretty damn clear! If you don't have a technical background, you might want to look into the "idiots" or Sam's, but if you have taken classes in programming, or have any technical ability, you will most likely have no problem with this book. By the way, there are some errors (standard in a textbook), and a 3rd edition is available.

Summary: don't get this junk
Review: I don't get it, if something is explained here its not clear or better to say impossible to understand most of the time.

Summary: The greatest book if you want to take AP C++!
Review: I used this book for my freshman C++ class and I think it was understandable. People who rate this book one star are the people that should be weeded out of computer science programs. Although C++ can not be spoon-fed, this book makes a good attempt. Unless you are in a college C++ class that requires this book, then get an O'Reilly book ("Practical C++ Programming"). You get more useful, real-world instruction.

Summary: The greatest book if you want to take AP C++!
Review: I was dying trying to acutally learn from those stupid little AP review books, and my very experienced comp sci teacher recommended I buy this book. I'm only an 11th grade HS student, and I have no problem understanding this text.

Summary: no problem
Review: if you are unable to understand this book maybe you should consider other fields of studies. To me it was understandible and easy to follow. By the way this book was uswd in my 1st programming class

Summary: I'm going to assign 3rd edition for a Freshman CS class
Review: If you have the 3rd edition, please tell me specifically what you find good or bad about it. I picked it over a number of others. The primary competing ones either tried to cover too much or had a jumbled appearance that I thought would be confusing.

So send me references to particular pages or examples. This will help us all and could help my teaching of it at Northeastern U. in Boston.

-- Professor Bob Futrelle, futrelle@ccs.neu.edu

PS: I'll review the book more thoroughly after teaching from it for three months.
