Summary: Lotus Notes and Domino R5 - Learn the Latest!
Review: Are you curious about the new features of Notes and Domino R5? Have you seen some of the TV or print ads for R5 and now you are ready to take the giant leap with super.human.software? Are you curious how to use Java with Domino or do you want to just set up a department meeting? Do you want to Exchange your current email system, or find out about firewalls? I cover these topics and more in my book, Special Edition Using Lotus Notes and Domino 5.

I have written this book to begin with the basics, but to cover the additional topics of application development and administration. I cover email, calendaring, contact management, Sametime collaboration, and mobile features. You'll learn about the new R5 Integrated Development Environment, LotusScript, Java, and JavaScript. I show you how to use the new design elements such as pages, framesets, and outlines. There are administration chapters on system installation, configuration, and upgrading from prior releases. You'll see how you can manage users, groups, email, databases and more. Finally, there are advanced topics including performance and capacity planning.

In a few paragraphs it is hard to summarize the over 1200 pages of important information in this book. You can see the entire table of contents at this web address: http://www.gwcorp.com/SEUsing50.htm. I have written several other books on Lotus Notes and Domino, but out of all of them, I hope you enjoy this one the best.

Summary: Good reference, but obviously rushed and not proof read.
Review: Book cover lots of issues not found anywhere else. But my copy has four chapter 45s and no 46 47 48 and 49 on the Part V111 Index page. I have seen a few other typos that I cannot recall. My copy has several pages covered in grease from the printing I suggest.

Summary: Extensive, exhaustive, explorative - goes very deep.
Review: Excellent for a Domino newcomer. No button or option left uncovered. The only thing I found missing were examples or exercises where you can implement and be walked-through real-life day-to-day situations. You might have to look elsewhere for that, it's hard to expect all that from a 1300 page book.

Summary: Great for someone new to R5
Review: Having bought the previous book by Mr. Tamura (Notes 4.6) which, at the time, was the only one around that covered 4.6 Client AND Server, I went for this book, too.
I agree that it might not be of any help for experienced Notes developers and admins, but for those of us who have to struggle through... it's a godsend.
I'm still working my way through it, but seeing as I use the 4.6 book as my bible... I have a sneaking suspicion that the same will apply to the R5 book.
It helped me set up R5 from scratch, and it worked. So there. ;-) Already I didn't have to go through the "Trial and Error" phase. That alone was worth it.

Summary: Worth it's weight in gold...
Review: I am new to Lotus Notes and Domino development. This book demystifies much of the the perceived weirdness surrounding Notes!

An excellent guide and reference. Thank you Mr. Tamura and Que!

Review: I found this book completely worthless. All of the descriptions are pure fluff with no advanced knowledge of how Domino functions. Each time I look for something it either is not covered or has some generic description. There are no complex code examples and no explanations of element functionality and limitations. This book is an awful waste of money!

Summary: This book was horrible
Review: I have been a Notes Administrator for a little more than 4 years and this book hasn't left my side since notes went to the R5 version. It touches on all admin and development topics that most real world Notes Administrators and Developers need to deal with on a daily basis. Comparing it to other books I would say it definitely is easier to follow and find the topic that you are looking for than any other Domino book out there to date. I highly recommend this book for beginners and Intermediate level Administrator / Developers.

Summary: Awful book..
Review: I knew nothing about Notes and Domino and wanted to learn with this book. Well, almost every minute spent with this book has been a total waste. The book explains concepts in most illogical places, and forgets to mention quite important topics.

One example: if you install Domino, you have to detach the admin's ID from its person document before you can login with a client. Domino setup doesn't tell you this, and if you don't already know, you're stuck. This book doesn't even MENTION an admin ID. It just tells you to log in. Duhh.

Furthermore, the author thinks he's giving useful information by describing a lot of things detail by detail. This is similar to explaining how cars work by alphabetically describing how every single little component works. That's NOT a way of explaining things.

A beginner needs a story about what replication is, how Notes and Domino work together, how to get things started. You CAN find the information, but you have to look very very hard in the most weird places.

If I wanted a detailed description of every little component, I wouldn't need a book.. I'd press F1 for Help..
