Rating: Summary: Great refrence, lots of practical "How-To's", a must have Review: A very concise and practical book. I was able to use some of the suggestions immediately. It is now one of my everyday "reference" books.
Rating: Summary: This book contains good reference on available tools Review: I liked and dis-liked this book. It provided a comprehensive description of availble monitoring and measurement tools for Windows NT. On the other hand, the many case studys were often too simple and left me feeling something was missing.
Rating: Summary: Must book for NT system administrators Review: I love this book! I can't believe I said this about a computer book. It does a wonderful job of explaining how to measure NT's utilization of CPU, Memory, I/O, and network resources. And more importantly how to make fix the problems. Thanks for doing such a great job.
Rating: Summary: Performance Monitor or Performance Monitoring? Review: The book was well focused on Microsoft Performance Monitor (ie, how to configure PerfMon) and provided some good insight on how to read and determine problems with specific counters. Some trouble-shooting techniques were provided, however very weak in substance. The majority of this book was really focused on PerfMon and reading and understanding the counters, bottom line. The spelling was unusually high in errors, and a spelling checker would have done this book good. I am surprised it actually got published like this! At any rate, I still feel I got my money's worth and I feel more confident using PerfMon and understanding counter values and what sort of error you may be experiencing if you exceed the threshold of some of these values.

Rating: Summary: not very good Review: This book has very little information in it. It has taken about 25 pages of useful information and combined it with some basic NT admin knowledge, some fairly useless tests and test cases and repeated itself a lot (I think I've found 5 explanations of the page file which are the same) and stretched it all out into a book. Also, it doesn't explain some things very well.
Rating: Summary: A book as good as a major hardware upgrade Review: This book is clear, accurate and well-written, packed with the details you need to gather performance data, and has just enough background data on hardware and Windows NT so you can understand why the data is important and how it influences your system. You won't only see that your CPU is 100% utilized; you will understand why it is maxed out and what you can do about it. In addition, the data is presented in such a way that you don't have to read the whole book before you can start using it.I highly recommend this book. Use it carefully and it can boost your performance as much as a major hardware upgrade. Lance Jensen Technical Support Manager Executive Software International, Inc.

You will find in formation on analyzing and resolving system performance issues as well as some solutions to general NT problems.
Rating: Summary: lots of useful tips Review: Very readable, lots of practical advice, and a truly fantastic number of typos. What ever happened to proofreading?
