Summary: The #1 book for the online auction business person. Period.
Review: After reading virtually every tome available on the subject of Online auctions, and being the type of person who will rarely endorse any product whatsoever, I wish to openly state that The Business Guide to Selling Through Internet Auctions by Nancy Hix, is, by far, the most thought-provoking, insightful and thoroughly written book for ANYONE selling in this marketplace.

Virtually every aspect of the auction process is covered, both at a glance and then, explored in depth.

Tips, tools and a myriad of selling systems, all designed for the auction user allow one to benefit fully from the online auction arena, flow from this easy to understand publication.

As the Founder and former CEO of Honesty.com, the official auction counter of the eBay auction site, and having 5 years as both a buyer and seller in the auction space, I rarely will offer up kudos to anything I see in terms of auction-related print.

Furthermore, it's very rare that I'll allow my name to be used in conjunction with any product, but in the case of Nancy Hix' latest book, I feel honored to have been asked to provide a cover quote.

It is truly the best tome I've read about the auction world, it's inner workings and nuances. And it's also geared towards both the new user and the 'old-school' auctioneer.

In effect, it offers something for everyone.

Best Regards,

Scott Samuel

Summary: A Can't-Miss Book for Internet Sellers
Review: If I were running a business seminar on auctioning any quantity of products through online auctions, I'd use "The Business Guide to Selling Through Internet Auctions" by Nancy L. Hix as the supporting textbook. I'd encourage students to follow her seven-step auction marketing plan to the letter.

I wish such a seminar had been available to me when I had a garage full of surplus items from a discontinued family business. I came close to chucking them into the trash when a friend suggested that I sell them on the Internet. "Online auctions are hot," she told me.

Not sure how to enter the online auction scene, I picked up a few books hoping to learn the tricks of the trade. One of them was Hix's book. After browsing through the table of contents and index, I almost returned the other books. Hix's is the only book I need! Whether I succeed or not is up to me, of course, but Hix provides a seven-step selling plan that will make it difficult for me to fail.

In her easygoing conversational style of writing, she covers such things as exploring my target market, studying how my competition operates, deciding what payment options to offer, and dozens of ways to get more visitors to my auction listings. She advises me to find the right auction site for my products and provides a valuable list of auction sites other than eBay. Chapter 11 was invaluable for me, since it deals with being an independent auction seller. She even offers advice on handling problem users. I'll be ready!

It's obvious that Hix knows the online auction process inside and out and did a tremendous amount of research. She cites many real-life examples from folks who make their living selling on eBay and other auction sites. If they can do it, so can I. I used some of Hix's HTML tips to format my descriptions. My first batch of auctions closed a few days ago and I earned a nice profit from them! I can't wait to list more. This book is perfect for all sellers, great and small.

Summary: Book description is completely misleading; & text lacks info
Review: This book is misleadingly advertised as: "For those businesses that want to supplement their sales online or those who want to make a full-time effort out of selling online in a structured, well-planned, repeatable way...." & "This book is not about having a garage sale online."

At best, these are gross exagerations, at worst...

The text of the book barely mentions ways for a business to sell either new, or liquidation merchandise.

The thrust of the book, contrary to the garage sale quote above, IS about having garage sales online, or at best, for a person to make a little extra money in their spare time. It is OBVIOUSLY NOT aimed at normal businesses; or full time auction sellers.

Also included is the obligatory story that, "I got an item for nothing at a garage sale, and sold it for a bundle on eBay!" that you have seen EVERYWHERE before.

I don't CARE about selling garage sale items on eBay, that's why I bought this book in the first place!

This book seems to be for neophytes, or sellers that haven't been selling for long. I don't believe that I found ONE fact that I didn't already know about online auctions in the entire 562 page book.

Her descriptions on many important matters tend towards the vague, fluffy or incomplete, with little hard information.

Also, Nancy Hix can't seem to use 10 words when 1,000 will suffice. This whole book could be condensed to under 150 pages will no loss of useful content. (WHAT was her editor THINKING???) She also seems enamored of filling up space with tons of unneeded screen shots of websites.

The only useful thing in the whole book are the links to other sites that are scattered throughout the book.

Don't waste your money on this one. Unfortunately, Starting an eBay Business for Dummies isn't much better.[...]

Summary: The eBay Dinasour's book
Review: This book is so outdated, you're better off ignoring it. I'd guess that maybe 30% of the material pertains to eBay, even that's a stretch.

I found the author to ramble at times, stroking they're own ego. I also found the detail quite boorish, almost as if the author wanted to fill out the book's length. If you're a newbie to online auctions, avoid this book, and get the Dummy's book. If you're an experienced eBay seller (say, 50 feedback or so), you don't even need this book. Save your cash.

Summary: Great Resource for eBay Sellers
Review: This book is the best guide for online auction sellers out there, and I've seen most of them. Many authors seem afraid to mention independent sites & services, but Nancy points out some terrific resources for sellers. Her screen shots of Web sites make it visually appealing. You can really tell this book was written by someone who sells herself, there are lots of "insiders" tips and tricks. My only complaint: that the publisher has not updated the book since it first came out - some of the services have closed up shop, and eBay Stores are not covered.
