Summary: Very useful
Review: As a unix system administrator for a small company, I also have to be the database admin, the network admin, windows admin, PC tech, web master, programmer of various languages on various platforms, and software support for multiple machines. Well, I do not have time to become a unix expert.

This book greatly helps to bring a person up to speed on how to manage a unix system. It has time saving tricks and tips. I use this book a few times a year, and a lot once I first got it. I think it will help anyone in a position where they have to maintain a mission critical unix system.

Summary: Want to do your job better, understand UNIX better, get it!
Review: Ever want to sit down with UNIX guru and just pick his/her brain for a minute... This book is like having hours to soak up all those little tid-bits and *useful* time tested tips.

I passed this book around to my co-workers and every one of them said they learned something.

Simply said you WILL learn you have options to some complicated UNIX system administration issues if you read this book.

Summary: GREAT BOOK!!
Review: Finally a book that deals with the real things that most UNIX system administrators face. It saves you the trouble of finding out things only after you face it. You could save yourself a lot of time solving problems that could have been avoided by reading this book. With the price nothing beats it. Not even those $30+ books.

I always bring it with me, reading it while commuting to/from work. I gained a lot of insight when I read the book. Some I already know but most are new to me. I've learned a lot here than any of the other books that I read.

This is a must book for any serious UNIX System Administrator.

Summary: Great all-round book for System Admins.
Review: I caught this book on sale at Amazon.com and I decided to check it out. If you're a Junior/Intermediate system administrator this book is an excellent value! Waingrow's book isn't platform specific and it doesn't re-hash simple unix commands like other books. He expects that you are mildly experienced in UNIX and gives system administration examples based on real-world experience. It would take me years of trial-and-error to learn what Waingrow packs into this book. However, good Senior administrators would probably find the book less useful.

One of the best chapters is "System Administration: The Occupation". It covers everything from creating your resume and preparing for an interview to finding other experienced administrators. I've never read another book that put as much thought into the "career" of system administration rather than the day-to-day tasks.

The only problem I have with this book is that I can't keep my co-workers from stealing it off my desk! Well worth the money.

Summary: It should have been published long ago ...
Review: I have couple of UNIX books it is either too simple or too complicated BUT not until recently I bought this book.I've read it for a week and enjoy every minutes practising the COMMAND & SYNTAX from the book.Hence, I must say this book should have been published long time ago. Every minutes I read and put on to practise , I realised how backward Microsoft is ...

Love thy UNIX !

Summary: Rare quality book filled mostly with non-standard stuff
Review: I think Kirk has achieved his goal. The book is really quite non-standard and entertaining. The writing style is exceptional. I could not stop reading this book during two days. Unix is not a dry subject for me anymore. The book is filled with good examples and real world situations from top to the bottom. Junior system administrators should sleep with this book. The book doesn't stick to any particular Unix platform which makes it even more valuable. I don't think that there are too many typo's in the book. You, guys, simply should adjust hints by Mr. Waingrow to your particular platform. Moreover, if you really love Unix it's really fun to find so-called "error" or "typo". I can only hope that this is not the last book from Mr. Waingrow. I consider this book as a superb achievement superior to many O'Reilly books.

Summary: some hints and no hacks
Review: I think the title for the review is pretty clear. This book does not accomplish his goal... it's a intermediate book - bboks like UNIX tools and others will give you a much more accurate and advanced approach.

Rating: 2 stars
Summary: 1 good chapter !
Review: I think this is not the kind of book I expected it should be .... But the one chapter that is good is the chapter about the Users .... The rest of the book *is* for beginnners !

Rating: 4 stars
Summary: Good entry level book
Review: I would have to say this book is well written but only buy it if you do not know UNIX very well. Anyone worth their salt will know 90% of what the book covers.
