Summary: A book plagued with errors that will obfuscate the beginner.
Review: This book's attempt to instruct the reader in Perl is an honest one, but someone wasn't watching the "store" when the book went through "quality" assurance! Riddled with programmatic mistakes in the main text and examples and having the chapter summaries contradict the chapter you just read are just some of the problems this book has. Save your money and find another book! I never like to write bad comments about anything, but this book reminded me of "buggy" software. It's annoying, and offensive that in this age of spell checkers, compilers and interpreters, the student/reader has to "debug" what s/he is reading!

Summary: Excellent book for a beginner
Review: Very good book for someone starting from Scratch. Have given it to a couple of my employees and within a week they were productive and had already done a few programs.

As a new Perl user myself, don't know how good it is for advanced users, but for beginners it is very good.

The topics on hand are clearly explained and the examples for each topic are usefull and easy to use.

Summary: I just want to comment on the CD
Review: Well, i just bought the book yesterday and came here to read about the customer reviews. From what i gather , people who bought it before 1998 didn't get the full version of the CD. My guess is that there were some faults with the earlier CD but they updated the CD over the years. The book stated that i shoud get msie2.0 but i got msie3.0.(Okay, So they got msie5.0 now). So for the guys who are worried about not getting the right stuffs in the CD, my advice is to check with the storekeeper before purchasing! And i think this is a good book for beginners wanting to get started on PERL, definitely not recommended for advanced users as already indicated on the back of the book(User Level=Casual)
