Summary: SAMS TEACH YOURSELF MACROMEDIA FLASH 5
Review: I was a bit apprehensive when sitting here with hundreds of books to chose from and not knowing the difference between each. I picked Sams' because it said "in 24 hours" which to me, was impression that it would be a "watered down" version of learning flash so that i, as a complete novice would have a brief understanding. Boy was i wrong. Yes, it's true that this book is easy to navigate and rather simple in it's approach, but as I found myself in hour 11 and hour 14 and so on, i began developing a sense of "gettin it" so to speak, and it wasn't so much what i was learning, but how useful that knowledge was, and i felt that from this book i could delve into another more intricate book and have a fairly good understanding of what i need to do. This is an excellent book in terms of value and while it may not be for more "advanced" users, for dopes like me, it's a perfect start.

Summary: GREAT for Beginners!!!!!
Review: I was a complete beginner when I received this book...It taught me alot including: shape tween, motion tween, masking, guide layers, onion skin, and even Action Script. So if you are a beginner this book is for you. Then, after you finish this book you can move on to more advanced books (Foundation Flash , Flash Magic).

Summary: Kind of a disappointment
Review: I was really kind of disappointed in this book. I was a little leary of the title because I tried to crack Flash on my own and it didn't seem like program you could master that quickly. So many good reviews on this book, I thought it would have to be pretty good and comprehensive. This book doesn't cover the subject with the depth you'd expect since its so thick. I bought the Visualy Quick Start Flash and the Flash Bible at the same time. The 24 hour book I returned. It didn't measure up to either of the other two books both f which I would highly recommend.

Summary: Good For New users
Review: If you are new to Flash 5 the this is the book for you. Even if you know Flash 5 but do not know Action Scripts, then also this book is for you. For advance user who knows Flash 5 well, this book will offer little new things. I suggest this book for beginner only. hasitdave@yahoo.com

Summary: Good for beginners and Intermediates
Review: Most of the resource books are just for beginners, with not much covered on more advanced techniques. This book does a good job of starting off with the basics and then going farther. This book is great for someone who has used Flash and knows the basics, but wants to learn more advanced features. This does not mean that someone who has never used Flash before should pass on this book, no, the descriptions of the basic features are very good. This book will teach you how to use Flash, but then, unlike other books, continue to instruct on more complicated subjects.

Summary: Great book for one new to Flash
Review: Please disregard the previous review I submitted as it contains an error. It should read that the author left out a gotoAndStop action on the rectangular button, not a Stop action on the 1st keyframe.

Summary: Maybe a little more than 24 hours!
Review: The author covers a lot of ground, but I got the feeling he was dragging me over all of it. While I did learn basic Flash, I found that the text was frequently imprecise and the screenshots were so small that they were difficult to see. I spent much more than an hour on many of the chapters, and still felt uncertain about the concepts.

Given the cost of the book, a small miracle in the world of overpriced computer books, it was probably worth the money. I note that the other reviews have been strongly positive, but I just can't agree with all their findings and praise. There is no clear conceptual framework in which to place the many exercises.

Rating: 3 stars
Summary: Newbies Only.
Review: The book is ideal for beginners and touches base with all the important aspects of flash. A lot of the information presented though can be learned by trial and error or by using the tutorials that come with flash.

Rating: 1 stars
Summary: This is the worst book
Review: The book teaches you the elements of using Flash but the exercises it instructs you to do are many times pointless...most especially the actionscript programming lessons. The "step by step" directions are confusing...at the end of the book, I was left wondering how I am going to build a usable flash site? Well, I know how to animate a bouncing ball...but what the hell is that going to do for my flash site? This is a confusing and worthless book.
