Rating: Summary: I really really dislike this book Review: This is one of my least favorite development books ever. After only a short time with it I have already given it "Place on a shelf never to open again" status.I somewhat prefer js over vb. However, to create an asp book that is purely dedicated to vb and not to list that on the cover is shameful. Since the person writing it seems to be tied into Microsoft I am guessing it is another MS attempt to push vb. Another example, the book only mentions Frontpage as a development tool for asp pages giving some totally uncredible information about working better with the IIS (internet information service). That is a pure lie as I use dreamweaver ultra dev 4 and ther is not a single problem with IIS. Also, I can't think of any developers I know who use Frontpage. They all use DW (the majority) or something esle. To ignore Dreamweaver is simply unacceptble. The vb issue aside, I still completely hate this book. I found the little bit of actual asp in the Dreamweaver Ultradev Bible (another great "bible" series book) far more intuative and instructive that the stuff in this book. To be specific, here are some things I hate: 1)The organization of the chapters is completely non-intuative 2) After much searching, I cannot find any information about inserting records 3) Nothing on creating dynamic variables and 4)nothing on setting datestamps. Note: I have looked at probably hundreds of development books over the last few years and I have never trashed a book online before. That is how much I dislike this book!
Rating: Summary: So well written you will read it cover to cover Review: With a somewhat limited exposure to ASP I have purchased 3 other 'ASP' books and use them as reference. I have never read a 'computer tech' type book cover to cover until the "ASP Developer's Guide". This book is not only well written but is very thorough! It covers the basics of actually setting up a web with IIS and establishing your global.asa, connections, etc and throughly explains it all very well. The author gives excellent practical examples with line by line notation on why this is the best and most practical way to design the code. He is also extremely thorough in addressing pieces of the language that one may not use on a day to day basis but, may utilize as an excellent reference tool. I would recommend this book for anyone beginning or actively using ASP. While the subject is often confusing for a total beginner this is by far the best book I have read to get started the right way.
