Summary: Excellent prep for the Dos/Windows portion of the A+ exam
Review: For anyone seeking to pass the Dos/Windows portion of the A+ exam, before CompTIA's revision of the exam to include Windows 2000 in January 2001, the A+ Exam Cram by James G. Jones is excellent.

I studied this book exclusively for that test and passed by a good margin, about 200 points higher than the minimum to pass...the first time I took it :)

I would not rely on this book for the Core/hardware test, however.

Summary: A good offering from an excellent series
Review: This book is most helpful if you purchase it along with the exam cram practice tests. This series was chiefly responsible for me getting my MCP, and I just got my A+ today thanks to this book. I've looked at other books on this topic, and was not impressed. For instance, I found that A+ for Dummies had a lot of irrelevant material in it.

Do keep in mind that the exam cram helps only if you would just barely pass it, or fail by just a few questions if you took the exam cold. It helps to have a fair bit of background knowledge, this book just helps you pull it all together. If you are unfamiliar with the subject material, go with the Exam Prep book first.

Summary: This book is not as well written as the other Exam Crams
Review: The information in this book seems to be poorly organized. Almost everything you need to know is covered in this book but not presented very well. The other Exam Cram/Prep books I have read such as IEAK 4.0 and IIS 4.0 were much better. This book will help you to pass but please do not solely rely on it.

Summary: Good source, BUT use other info
Review: First let me say that I really like exam cram books. This one was a good source of info, but there are some specific details that should have been included. Make sure to use the cram sheet in the front of the book, it has info that wasn't in the book. YOU WILL NEED OTHER SOURCES OF INFORMATION. I heard a lot of recommendations for Michael Meyers' book, but didn't use it.

Summary: Good Preparation.
Review: This is an excellent book to start with. Don't waste your time on those 5 inch thick books for $70, there will be no questions on the 8086/8088 processor so you can pass them buy. They tend to pad a lot with historical information you don't need. I would recommend other sources to, just to round out your reading. I got the Exam Cram A+ Practice Tests along with the Exam Cram A+ Flash cards and they really helped me to feel confident.

Summary: Just watch out!
Review: I took the first exam 3/4/2000 and passed it with a 77. This book help me some, but I recommend studying at least two more books. Besides this one I used A+ for Dummies and A+ Core Module by David Groth. All of these books had errors and if you're new it may be confussing. In the exam there were about 20 questions not related to the books I used to study, the only thing that help me was my experience as a Technician. Just to name a few examples Each book had a different definition for PCMCIA!, and I wonder which definition is the right one! .PC Memory Card International Association?, Personal Computer Card Industry Association? or Personal Computer Card Interface Adapter?. The other one was PCI. Peripheral Component Interconnect or Peripheral Component Interface. Another thing; and this was on the real exam, Just remember that Pentium Pro does not have MMX as well as for the 486's, 386's etc. Only on P1 W/MMX and PII & PIII. My suggestion to the one who want to become A+ is to buy a Dictionary of computer terms and stick to it for a more solid definitions on anything. Walter C. Summary: Exam Cram, Needs more Help.
Review: I have reviewed this book and found a large amount of errors in it. If you looking for a good book for after thought knowledge (After the test) this this would be a good buy at the $1-5 store. If you going into the test COLD (not knowing anything) look elsewhere for the book of knowledge. This one will just confuse you more than you need to be.
In addition I did not see a whole bunch of the exam test questions that were questions out of this book.

Summary: Correction to file name length
Review: Windows supports a maximum of 256 characters for a file name, whoever was quoting 260 was quoting an incorrect number.

I think it is important to realize that any one book is not going to prepare you for any of the exams.

If you are serious about becoming certified I would recommend using as many resources as you can in order to get the highest score on the exam you possibly can.

The sources include CBT (Comptuer based training), books, the Internet, and others that have taken and passed the exams.

Personally I prefer CBT because its an interactive form of learning and also lets you work at your own pace and keeps it interesting while you learn.

Please remember people that just because someone in another book quotes one thing does not mean they are correct, verify all information if possible.

Jason Sheets MCSE, MCP, A+ Certification Holder.
