Summary: Overall - Pretty Good
Review: The book supposedly is geared for beginners to the Java world - and for that it works. The sections where Lemay does not write are clearly evident. Lemay takes definitions and breaks it up into digestable bites. The other contributors rattle on until my head wants to explode! Take it for what it is worth - a basic book.

Summary: ahhh!! this is the most poorly written programming book!!!!!
Review: the first few chapters did the worst job at explaining objectoriented programming, but then, to make it worse, they don't evenexplain how to write classes!!! after that, don't even think about understanding graphical user interfaces, i sure couldn't after I read the chapter 10 times..on my first day reading through the examples, I found a total of 23 typos, in the examples!!! how are you supposed to learn java when NONE of the examples work. i think they rushed this book a bit too much... if you want to learn java, check out ***Java: How To Program by Deitel & Deitel**** it's a really good and comprehensive book, much better than this, a little more expensive but it's worth it, two thumbs up

Summary: Your worst nightmare. You might as well eat nails.
Review: The horrible truth of the matter is that the great lemay isn't so great. In fact, her work is quite terrible. I beat my head against the wall trying to learn Java with this book for over a month. When I wasn't fighting one of the dozens of errors in the code, I was trying to figure out what the heck the author was talking about or what the heck the author skipped. I don't care what anyone else tells you, this book just isn't worth the headache

Summary: 21 days? what a joke
Review: The title is misleading: I was looking for a quick way to learn Java and was very disappointed. The book is filled with irrelevancies. Stay away from it if you're in a hurry. Hint: look at the number of pages...

Summary: Hard to understand.
Review: There were too many errors in this book, and the book jumps from topic to topic while they weren't finished. I am a C++ programmer, and it's still hard to understand many concepts so vital in learning Java. Don't buy it, I'm sure you will refund it, or regret that you bought it, like I did.

Summary: This book is not bad if you know object-oriented programming
Review: This book is a fairly good book if you have experience in C++. If you don't know object-oriented programming, my advice is to start from the beginning. Learn C/C++ first!!!!!

Summary: Recieved as part of the Sam's Java Starter Kit, great stuff!
Review: This book is great for the person just getting into Java and learn it. After learning this, I suggest buying John Withers Java Book. Java in 21 days is the most complrehensive book on learning basic Java

Rating: 3 stars
Summary: Ah, it's OK
Review: This book is indeed a little difficult to understand. Unless you know C and or C++, it is hard to understand. There are indeed errors in the book. Is this some sort of trickery in order to be able to continue to come out with a 2nd, a 3rd, a 4th, etc. editions?

Summary: A very poor Java Reference Book
Review: This book may be ok for someone who just wants to read about Java but is a very poor reference. I needed to know the details on how to implement Exception Processing in my code and found this book to be very verbose but seemed to leave out some of the important details. I opened up my older copy of Core Java and I found the information that I needed immediately. The same thing happened when I needed details on how to put the FileDialog widget in my code. In short, I wish I could return this book to Amazon and get my money back

Summary: Teach yourself java in 21 YEARS
Review: This book never comes close to presenting istself as a stand alone subject for learning java. Especially not in 21 days or 100 days, I would challange if it could be done in a year. This book is poorly written with enormous amount of errors , not just in the text but in the program listing themselves. I doubt if this book was proof read or even if any of the programs where written and carried out to the extreme to see if they really worked. While this book covers a lot of topics there are poor to no examples on any of the material that is covered.

This book alone with the second edition is being used for a subject class for a college level course. The second edition is not as bad as the first , tho , what are the odds of the same program appearing in both books and in different formats and yet neither one will run when you get done. Well you just have to present them to the instructor and ask him to give it a go . oh! it wont run . maybe we ought to throw out the books. Heres an idea lets get hold of the auther , you mean they wont answer there email. WOW , and to think we buy this junk and nobody ever sits down and looks it over. Simply amazing. so if you are interested in java , i know two books at least to stay away from.

i have a library of several books that i use for reference, and i could not at this time recommend one. If there is someone out there who has some great degree of results let me know . It could also help others.

If i had to choose one it would be the " complete reference of java by Naughton / Schildt ". while not the best it does answer a lot of questions.

learing java you need to really be exposed to layouts ,events networking and windows. this book falls short on all accounts.

yes i am still working on java , i like the langauge and will learn it one way or another .

so happy programming to one and all.

do drop me a line
