Rating: Summary: Just Like the Tutorial Review: dear mr luke ahearn: one of the reviewers from belgium wrote: "Why I won't buy this book, July 15, 2000" Reviewer: rosefromb (see more about me) from Belgium I've been eagerly awaiting a book about "The Games Factory", but as I already have the TGF program, I certainly won't spend 50 bucks on 384 pages. And the "free" program will only let you exchange with other owners of TGF, it won't let you make stand-alone games. What a disappointment.is this true or false ? please clarify. this is hurting your book imho. i'm also wondering if the tool is really free or not too. thanks. mh

Rating: Summary: The beginning of an adventure. Review: For those that have never programmed in windows or are looking for a quicker way to program, this book is for you. The book contains software to get you started. It contains all the links to web sites so you can continue to learn more. True you could go online and try to read all the information on the web sites, but it can be hard to follow. This book give you an introduction to the language of frames, objects, frame editor, extensions, etc. It brings the subject of game creation into comprehension to the average computer user. The advanced games programming will find comparing their current paradigm (like programming in C etc) with the new one persented interesting. Overall, there aren't too many books on the market that give a straight forward introduction to the world of programming for games without having to program in a script language. Installation of TGF was straight forward in windows, the 3D editor was a little more tricky though being a dos based program with a low resolution. There are other programs on the CD programs that bring together a total set of beginner gaming tools. Would I recommended it to somebody to read, is yes.
Rating: Summary: Did you read the book? Review: From what I understand the version of TGF is a special version only in this book and there is a lot more to the book than TGF. I found the design portion I am still reading very useful.
Rating: Summary: I suggest you try other sources for TGF information! Review: Having been a user of the products like TGF... I can only saythat you will learn a lot more and spend less money by going to that URL. This book is not only fudging by not telling you that the version of TGF they include is freely available online, they also alledgedly have gotten most of their information about this kind of programming from regular users without paying them or mentioning them. So, skip the high price of plagerism, and go to the source. The products are great, and so is the support. The only good thing about this book is it makes you aware of "Clicking" as a valid way to create things.
Rating: Summary: Oldish, but still good value for money Review: I bought this book knowing that it is an old edition, because I have an old PC (1998) and don't think that the second edition's CD-ROM would work on my ancient machine. For my purposes it is an excellent book. It teaches you the basics of game making, focusing on 2D game creation, mainly via the wonderful The Games Factory software which is really value for money. If you want to get to know The Games Factory well, this is the book for you. The explanations are clear and well written. I can heartily recommend this book and CD-ROM if you want to play around, learning and making your first games. But it is probably not suitable for the serious games maker.
Rating: Summary: Awesome Game Creation Review: I bought this book thinking it was a full game creater only to find out it was only find out it's not the full version and you have to go online to register this game only to find nothing on the web site to register it on. you will see Games Factory Screen on start up. you will not be able to save stand alone games you will not be able to make screen saves or internet games + i am a bit disappointed.
Rating: Summary: I actually read the book Review: I dont' think the other reviewers have read this book. The book is not meant for someone who has usesed TGF for 5 years - it is introductory. There is also a lot more to the book than TGF; desing, 3d stuff.
Rating: Summary: The People Helper Review: I think that this tutorial is exelent. I am a fairly good with compuers and this book still taught me how to do some things. I like the artwork in the book. it shows me that the writer spent his time looking for and makeing it. I think that the layout is good because it teaches u in steps and still manages to have humor every now and than. By teaching in steps people aren't overwhelmed right away with computer mumbojumbo. This book lets u create games that are better than some of the games at Comp USA and u dont have to be a 3d art expert or a C++ master. By supplying the needed software for game creation and the expert knowledge and advice of an experienced, well known, game designer now an 8 year old can create a great, fully functional, game.
