Summary: Sackett's second effort is worth taking a look at.
Review: George Sackett has updated his Router Handbook and his latest effort is worth taking a look at as he has made corrections and updates to the latest technologies. Sackett has taken Cisco Routing to a new level this book should make a handy reference to have on hand.

Sackett starts his 985-page book off with Cisco Software versions 11 and 12, which is good for almost every router technician. His next topic is network design and his breakdown is informative and detailed.

There are sections for the following topics, RIP I and RIP II, which is a change from the previous edition, IGRP, EIGRP, OSPF and BGP. Also included are section for frame relay, and ATM design as well as DSL and voice, ISDN, DDR and VPN all new with this edition.

Finally you have coverage of security and firewalls and chapters on the configuration of RIP, IGRP, EIGRP, OSPF and BGP. Sackett's books is more than hardware as evidenced with chapters covering the design of networks using ATM, Frame Relay, DSL, Novell, Voice, and VPN.

Don't let the price tag sway your decision; this is well worth the money.

Summary: A poor job of reviewing this book was done.
Review: George Sackett made an honest attempt to create a single source for information on Cisco routers. However, the editors and reviewers have failed; Mr. Sackett was allowed to put out a book so filled with basic grammatical and type errors that it quickly becomes difficult to read and comprehend.

Summary: Nice doorstop...
Review: I bought this book about a year ago after reading the reviews on here. It's a big book, people sing praises of it, as you flip through the pages it definitely has some good stuff. I'm trying to use it as a reference I refer to every month or two when I'm working on relatively basic stuff...verifying a NAT setup on a router, maybe looking on how to setup rate limiting. I pick up this book, flip to the anemic index to find next to nothing on whatever topic I'm looking for. Maybe if I had time to sit down and become more familiar with this book it might be useful, but personally I find O'Reillys Cisco IOS in a Nutshell waaaay more useful.

Summary: Buy It! Invaluable Resource
Review: I have had this book on my desktop for several months now. It has time and time again proved to be an invaluable resource. There isn't much in the way of switching, but then again, this is a "Router Handbook." This book even goes into details on networking leagcy systems, a rare find right there. It covers design and implementation of classles and classful routing protocols as well as DDR, making it a good resource on your CCNA and CCNP routing exams. It also covers in detail different router's specs, which was vaulable while studying for the CIT and BCRAN exams. At the price this is selling for used, it seems almost criminal. I am a CCNA and CCNP and still find myself pulling this book off the shelf every other week for reference. BUY IT.

Summary: A Goal That fell Short
Review: This book should have been an excellent resource (a cisco bible even) if the editors and technical reviewers had been more careful. Too many grammatical and sentence structure errors. Not to mention, the index is hard to read (difficult to distinguish where an alphabetical listing begins and ends). Also information listed in the index wasn't actually included on the page it referenced.

Summary: cisco router inside out
Review: this is the only reference book you need for cisco router

the book has the design and configuration of RIP I and RIP II, IGRP, EIGRP, OSPF and BGP. Also included are chapters on frame relay, and ATM design as well as DSL and voice, ISDN, DDR and VPN

Of particular interest were the coverage of security and firewalls as well as voice configuration.

All in all, the book is more than a reference tool for cisco router technologies. A little hitch though, is the typographical and grammatical errors.

A GOOD BOOK

Summary: My personal Cisco Reference book!
Review: What separates Cisco Routers from the rest? What makes Cisco Certifications one of most sought after certifications in the computer industry? Where can you find a reference manual for Cisco that covers more than just one certification topic? Try Cisco Router Handbook.

What amazed me about this book was amount of information included. Also the author's ability for detailed information is another huge plus to buying this book. Sackett makes sure that every topic is covered completely and the information is not accurate but up to date.

Starting off with the IOS software and then moving into router hardware. The router hardware section covers most if not all of the Cisco line. Next you have network design and IP routing design, both sections are very well laid out and the information is easy to follow.

With other sections on Frame Relay, ATM, switch networks, SRB, APPN, ISDN and DDR design rounding out the field. You have the author giving you chapters devoted to the IP, RIP, IGRP, EIRGP, OSPF and BGP Routing Protocols, more than any other book I have seen so far.

Finally there are section on Novell and IPX, route distribution and legacy systems which when you boil it all down covers CCNA to CCIE exams all in 900 pages. While the cost is around $70.00 your money is well spent for possible the one reference book that every Cisco technician should have with them.
