Rating: Summary: Fantastic, thorough, informative book on Java! Review: This book is terrific! I used it to accompany me through my development of my Java client/server project. The examples (although some of which didn't work for some reason) were numerous and applicable. This book is great for the beginner and for the experienced programmer! Great for learning, and great for reference!
Rating: Summary: GREAT BOOK Review: This book is great for anyone who wants to learn JAVA Programming from the gound up !
Rating: Summary: Superb Review: Maybe it's not for beginners, but the two chapters I read on file i/o and jdbc were worth the price of the book itself. Very clear, well-laid out structure. Ivor Horton has a gift for explaining things in an easy to understand way. I didn't read any stuff on applets, however - Deitel and Deitel might be better for that - but this book is much better than D & D in other respects.
Rating: Summary: This book has it all for beginners and beyond Review: When I was searching for my first book on Java most of what was out there norrowly focused on only a few select subjects, mostly syntax and structure. Not this book. After teaching you Java from the ground up it goes into Objects. From there you have a choice of learning the basics of AWT, JDBC, Networking, RMI, or other useful, real world topics without having to buy another book. Every chapter is chock full of examples and sample code. I consider myself an intermediate Java programmer today and I often use this book as a reference. If your a beginner, want to learn the langauage, and want a solid foundation on what Java is capable of, buy this book !.
Rating: Summary: A great book that helps you understand Java. Review: This book covers many topics. The good thing is that it also contains lots of examples that helps me understand how to program in Java. However, this book does not cover data structure in Java(I guess that's another topic for another book).
Rating: Summary: Great for self-study Review: At the moment, I have neither the time nor financial resources to go out and take a Java class at the local JC. Of the four books I've tried to use in order to teach myself the language, this one has, by far, been the most helpful. It goes through EVERYTHING step-by-step and is exhaustive in its information. A little too exhaustive for my taste. I'm a little annoyed by the structure of the book (Applets are discussed near the last half and are only glossed over) but it provides an education that allows one to grasp new concepts quickly. One should definitely try to get a grasp on the Object Oriented programming model before diving into this book, though.
Rating: Summary: Dont listen to them!! Review: Unlike other people have said,It is NO WAY too hard, yeah,if ure IQ is 78,then dont get it..but im 13.and i completed the main of this book in a week, and i still use if for reference today.I think the problem is that most of these newbies were expecting an 'In 21 days' book, which gets u writing some paint applets really quickly, but then leaves u stuck in to what to do next! This book covers everything!I have had the pain of buying an 'In 21days' book, then looking for a book the next step up..and finding i knew too little to continue..not this book-it teaches you everything! overall: GET THIS BOOK!!ive read every book on the market and this is by far the most informative and helpfull of them all!id give it 10star if i could!!!
Rating: Summary: need proofreading and trimming Review: The book it's ok in the sense that it covers many important aspects of Java; however, it's too wordy, redundant, confusing. Sometimes, it lacks cohesion. I'm sure the author could have made his point with far less words and paper, but hey, that's how it gets its price. Also, there are typos, not many but enough to confuse and annoy. If you have enough pacience to decipher what the author is saying and a few errors in the sample code, then this is a good book.
Rating: Summary: Excellent tutorial for Object-Oriented programming in Java Review: This book is the best book I ever read!!!. The Author explaint the Document/View architecture so deep and clear. I applied this idea on my two big Java projects and it works excellent. I agree that half part of this book is not for beginner. The people who can understand this book will need strong Object-Oriented programming experience.
Rating: Summary: The worst book I have read on Java Review: I have read many books on java and this is the worst of all for the following reasons: 1) You can not understand a new idea from a 10 page example. 2)It doesn't describe the 1.0.2 event model and the description of the 1.1 event model is really very very confusing!!! 3)Applets are examined very very briefly! 4)The description of the AWT model is also confusing due to the very big examples.
