Rating: Summary: Hope this book addresses problems for the reader Review: I hope that Power Programming addresses your needs in getting deep into working with Access 97 and Office. Push yourself and Access becomes a great tool for developing database applications!
Rating: Summary: The first couple chapters-extremely helpful Review: I picked up this book after scanning two others that referred those new to VBA (ME!) to Mr. Barker's book. The first couple chapters have provided basic information about syntax and design strategy that I haven't found elsewhere. I can't wait to read the next 800 pages!
Rating: Summary: a book lives up to its title Review: I really like this book because it's so right down to the point, very effective and accurate, and easy to read. There are too many Access books out there are either too big or spend too much time to cover as much various level of audience as they can. This book is not very comprehensive in that sense and it does not cover a lot of basic (but necessary) materials for beginners. But for what it covers, it covers so well. I would not recommend it as your first (and only) Access book (for above reason). But for those who want to reach out beyond the basics, it's an excellent book to own.
Rating: Summary: Pretty Good but some typos Review: I would agree with the others that the approach of this book is exactly what I was looking for. Too many of the other books spend hundreds of pages on very elementary descriptions of how Access is used. This books skips right to the programming. However, I am only on page 48 of the book and have found two typos (page 48 and page 45) in the example code Barker uses that would render the examples unworkable. The CD ROM versions of this code appear to be correct, though.
Rating: Summary: Excellent book for serious programming, NOT for beginners Review: The code in this book and that supplied on the CD was marvelous at helping me solve some serious problems and questions I had in a major database last year. I found it easy to understand and it was real life! Not something simple that no one can use.I also emailed the author with a comment and received a reply within 2 days! I was impressed to say the least. I teach VB And Access classes and tell all my advanced Access students (and those in VB that use Access) to get this book.
Rating: Summary: Best book that I have read on Access Programming Review: This book jumps right in to Access VBA does not waste space on Access fundamentals. It covers just about everything you can use in Access VBA. It gives you all of the sample code, some good API calls and ActiveX control information. A little light on WEB development but that's not the purpose of this book
Rating: Summary: For the experienced Access/VB Programmer only! Review: This book taught me how to do a lot, but also left me puzzeled on the very advanced stuff. On some things it tended leave out a step and seemed to just assume I knew what to do. But over all I did learn a lot. Whoever can master this book really will be a master of Access.
Rating: Summary: Best Access programming book for all programming levels Review: This is my favorite Access book - and I have them all. Mr. Barker begins with THE BEST! review of VB syntax and constructs required for Access and the Access DAO hierarchy. Next, he presents data manipulation techniques, especially using SQL, as it relates to Access. The rest of the book is chock full of tips and tricks on developing "Professional" Access applications. I especially like Chapter VI, "The Finishing Touches." Here, he includes lots of code every Access application should have. Leverage it! As an Access instructor for three years, I recommend this book to all my students because of its introduction of VB, Access code, and DAO. It's the best review. As President and Professional Developer, I mandate this book (and others) to my employees and consultants as a reference on how to DO IT RIGHT, and for its wealth of resources (i.e., Chapter VI).
