Summary: Concise, get-to-the-point, and current
Review: This book is concise, easy to read, get-to-the-point, hands-on and current. The first six chapters are very easy to follow and do not contain excessive or irrelevant materials. I spent four hours (finished the first 6 chapters) and a Samba 2.0.3 is up-and-running.

A very few details are missing. In particular, chapter six does not say that you need to be "su" to run smbpasswd to initialize encrypted SMB passwords.

Overall, a great book for Samba starters!

Summary: Great Samba Installation and Configuration Book
Review: This is a must have for anyone starting in the Samba world. There are what seems to be billions of different ways Samba can be set up and this book goes a long way in discussing most of those configurations. The book appeared to be only about installation and configuration due to the fact that discussions on maintenance of the Samba environment were somewhat sketchy. But then again, rumor has it, Samba is an almost maintenance free package. I guess I will find out. This is the only book I have read about Samba and I do not think another one is required. I will be suggesting this book to my colleagues and hope to see another Sams/Carter book soon.

Summary: an excellent, technically accurate Samba guide
Review: This is an excellent book. I must admit that I was just a tad nervous when I first saw it as I usually try to check over Samba books before they are released to make sure they don't have any major errors. I didn't get a chance with this one so it was great to see that Gerald and Richard have got everything right, even some stuff that is wrong in the Samba docs (yes, we'll fix that eventually ...)

I particularly liked the clear explanation of security models in Samba, as I know that many users have problems with that, which is understandable as much of it is quite counter-intuitive.

John Blair's book was good, but is now a bit dated as so much has changed in Samba 2.0. It is great to now see a book that is up to date with the latest changes and that explains the inner workings of Samba so well.

Summary: A must have!
Review: This is the second book on configuring SAMBA that I have bought -- the first one was John Blair's book. John Blair's book is pretty good, however I became concerned that it had become dated so, based on a recommendation I read on slashdot.org, I bought this one. This book is fantastic! I found the information appropriately detailed, yet concise and to-the-point. I didn't really intend to read it straight through, but the information is so good and so well presented that it is practically compelling to read! I have not finished reading it yet, but I have read the first 11 chapters. If the remainder is anything like what I have read thus far, this book is a jewel. I can't imagine needed to replace it with anything other than perhaps an updated version that covered newer features in a future iteration of SAMBA. It's nice to find such a useful book!

Summary: A good book for People
Review: This was one of the first few Unix books I read when I had little experience in Unix administration. It gives detailed account on Samba development and how it works with windows networking. So if you have learnt some stuff already in Unix and Windows administration and if you are interested to have a brief account on how it works, then this 24 hour series surely will give you a nice introduction.

More importantly, the book guides the readers step by step on how to get the latest source of Samba, how to compile it, how to install it, how to configure it and how to get it work with 98/NT . Indeed the book has put together a whole picture of Samba that everyone should begin with and could easily comprehend. I set up mine successfully with the book.

However to really get Samba in production with this 24 series, I think more details on Samba configuration and security issue should be discussed if this series intend to serve Unix newbies like me. It is hard to follow the instructions to set up the password to control communication between NT and Unix. I suggest there should be some relevent Unix topic to be introduced in the book.

To conclude, this 24 series is really a good guide for people strong in Unix especially when we consider this book is one of the earliest books on Samba topics. The book is of quite excellent quality.

Summary: Excellent book covering Samba and networking basics
Review: Very well done... This is not only a good reference book it actually does help you setup samba step by step. The trouble shooting section is well done and the author covers alot of networking issues that you'll run into along the way.

I heard that O'Reilly has a similar book coming out, but it will most likely be harder to follow. This is written above the "For Dummies" level but not in the arcane O'Rielly style - fits nicely inbetween. Highly recommend it. :)
