Summary: The best reference book for Pc Upgrade and Repair
Review: This book is excellent!! It has it all...it is more of a reference book than a how to so to speak.....that's not to say that you could not learn how to build a system from this book, it's just more informative as to say.......The newest PIII socket....the socket 370 as it's called (because it has 370 pins) was introduced in January of 1999. This book lists each pin number that it has and what each pin is for. There is a diagram of a socket 370 on page 86 Chapter 3 in this book. This is just a very small example of how much detail this book has in it. Now although I love this book there is one that is better. That book is called "Upgrading and Repairing Pc's 12th Edition!! Also if you are one of the first 1,000 buyers of the 12th Edition..you will also get a how to video that is almost 2 hours long for free!! That's in addition to the CD that comes along with this book....the video has footage not inclued in the CD. I just ordered this book a few minutes ago....and anxiously await it this week!! : )

Summary: The Bible of PC Repair and Upgrades
Review: This is the best book to have on your repair bench. The author has done a great job breaking down everything you need to know, in great detail. The illustrations are the best I have ever seen in a computer related book of this type.

Having owned previous editions of this book, I keep them all. Sometimes, my computer friends and collegues want me to give them my older versions. I tell them I can't break up the family.

If you are in the market for a great reference book or studying for your A+ certification, this is the book to have. Well worth the investment.

Summary: Scott Mueller does it again
Review: Scott Mueller's latest update of his popular Upgradind and Repairing PC's series has once again proven to be a useful and valuable addition to my technical library. Unlike other name authors of similar series, Scott actually adds current and insightful information for the professional. I was particularly impressed by the cutting edge information on the latest chips. Having in depth information on the current AMD, Cyrix and IDT offerings, and of course Intel, was suprising in hard back form and quite impressive. Clearly Mr. Mueller and Que books are very committed to staying on the cutting edge.

In addition to in depth analysis and how to's on all imaginable topics, a 90 minute video CD is included. Rather than slapping together a shareware collection and dumping it on a captive audience, Scott Mueller does a very good job of practicing what he preaches. The cd alone is reason for the novice, and not-so-novice reader to purchase the set. All in a worthwhile addition to anyone's computer library

Summary: This book changed my life!
Review: I didn't know much about computers before I got this book, and my computer kept on giving me errors and more grief than my boss does. After reading all about my computer and watching the video that comes with the book, I learned what parts of my computer were not working and how to fix them, and which parts just plain need to be thrown out and replaced. Thanks to Scott Mueller, my computer is running stabler than ever before and all my friends awe at my "techno-hippness". I am now very busy fixing my family's computers and making them work the way they should. If I started charging them money, I wouldn't need their inheritance!

Summary: Make A Spot On Your Library Shelf !
Review: If you know how to turn a computer on, this book should be part of your personal property, unless the 12th Edition is out. Scott Mueller has taken research to the highest level in this wonderful exchange of information. I refer to this book at least 10 times a week, at work and at home.

Thanks Scott for taking on the responsibility of educating and instructing the entire computer world with easy to follow and indepth explanation.

Summary: By far the worlds best PC hardware book
Review: The book deserves 20 out of 5 stars. I currently own the 1st, and 6th-11th editions, and plan to buy the new edition when it comes out next month.

I initially heard of this book around the 4th edition (about 1994). At the time I heard of it, I felt very comfortable with my computer knowledge. Within the first few pages I was learning even more.

Some colleges are using this as their required text, and it's easy to see why. If you want a hardcore detailed technical reference that gets right down to the metal, this is it. I own about 4 other hardware books from different authors, and Scott Mueller's is the ONLY one I buy every year.

As most other reviewers have said, Scott has a gift for teaching to you in a very professional, explanatory way. He never talks down to you or makes you feel stupid. Whether you are a complete novice who knows only to call it the computer instead of the base unit, or a screen instead of a monitor or CRT, this book will help you out.

He doesn't insult the novice or the expert. Even if you email him, he is very nice to all. Some might wonder why this book is so large. He has taken a very complex subject, and tried to explain as much of it as possible. The problem is, if he would have only taken half as many pages, there would be too many unanswered questions. While some might look at this book and say there is way too much technical information, isn't that the point of this book? This book is not PC's For Dummies, its meant for those wanting to greatly expand their knowledge.

What is interesting is that all my friends have a minimum of 10 years in this field, and all of us have learned a lot from reading his books.

Whether it's learning about the early computers, the process in which CPU's are made, how SCSI works, optical technology, peripheral cards, what chip sets mean, ROM, RAM, ZIF, cache, microcode, north and south bridges, bus frequencies, EEPROM, and countless hundreds of other things, you will find it in here. And I don't mean a brief overview either! VERY detailed.

Scott's book is THE most popular, and it's easy to see why. A popular book store I go to ALWAYS has at least 3 times the amount of this book than the other authors books.

Don't hesitate on this one. You won't be disappointed. For the price, you CANNOT learn all this in most classes. You would need to take MANY classes and spend thousands to learn all of this information.

Guaranteed, it will unlock the mysteries of the computer.

Summary: A First Rate Reference Book
Review: At first glance, one may think that this mammouth sized book is for power user's only. Afterall, it goes into exhaustive detail on literally every aspect of the modern PC. The book explains everything from basic maintenance, to partitioning a hard drive, to upgrading your processor etc. This new edition also gives extra SCSI coverage. But don't let the size and the technical jargon scare you away. This book is actually for everyone, from the novice computer user to the most advanced. Surprisingly, Mueller is able to take what is very complex and explain it with a clarity that any layman can understand. Added is a full array of diagramns and dialogue boxes with helpful hints and tips.

Most people will never use all of the information that this book provides. Nonetheless, whatever you are looking for, I guarantee you will find here. Plus you will find it easily. Mueller arranges the book so that it is easy to bypass any unrelevant information and swiftly locate your particular need.

It could be said that this book is to the personal computer what Gray's Anatomy is to the human body. It is a must for every PC owner!
