Summary: Great book for anyone interested in computer hardware
Review: When i started reading this book i couldn't stop, Scott's descriptions, not to mention his history of certain parts, are interesting and extremely detailed. He describes every part in detail and gives out troubleshooting tips for any installation problems that might arise. This book helped me out while building my computer and answered a few questions about some of the parts i was using. I highly reccomend this book to anyone who has an interest in computer hardware, THIS IS THE BIBLE FOR TECHIES, AND ETHUSIASTS ALIKE.

Summary: A+ Rookie
Review: I recently passed my A+ exam and bought this book as a reference. This is my first purchase of a Scott Mueller book and I am very impressed. I am on contract with a local company for their computer repairs and I use this book daily, I have yet to look up a word or program that i dont understand, and it not be in the index of this book, COMPLETE coverage. Its nice to read a book that actually answers true life questions that you have while doing the repair, he doesnt just run off the 27 steps and expects every computer do be the same. The CD is also great, wish there were more of his great videos.

Summary: Blabbermouth
Review: This refers to the Eighth Edition book: Upgrading and Repairing PCs. lead us into the computer, not out of our minds with myriad lists of things to remember. I prefer pictures and compilers to cheap type. PCGuide was far better.

Summary: Mr. Flappy Lips
Review: At least in Upgrading and Repairing PCs, Eight Edition: This guy talks way too much. He needs to shut his big fat mouth and provide more concrete pictorial examples. As a technician, I know that the best way to teach is interactive, either through pictures, videos, anything but pages of text. He just whizzes away one page of verbosity after another, MR FLAPPY LIPS can't teach. A failure as a teacher. He just need to SHUT UP and show lots of pictures of screw drivers and equipment and repairs in action. It does no good to make lists of tools you need with names you're not going to remember. This is not a very effective way of teaching something:

A) Unscrew chassis cover B) Pull chassis module out from plastic mounts being careful not to break ..... blah, blah, blah

This is HIM.. This is THE MOUTH...Mr FAILURE Mueller in action.

Summary: Okay, now how do you read this thing?
Review: I'm sure this is a wonderful book. It must be to have so many pages? On the other hand, if you are a computer technician looking for information, there are much better publications out there. Anything by Peter Norton, anything by Craig Zacker. Mr. Mueller has accumulated a lot of information, but it's rather difficult to wade through.

Summary: You can't go wrong!
Review: I've been using Mueller's books as my primary source for computer upgrades and repairs for the past 7 years; and he has never steered me wrong. If I want a quick overview before installing new hardware, it's all right there in his book. If I want to know the nitty gritty detail regarding new hardware - or older hardware - it's all right there in the book. And lastly, if I need to know how to troubleshoot a piece of hardware, it's all right there. I also found the info on the CD helpful as well. It goes without saying, but I'll say it anyway, I am already looking forward to purchasing the "lucky" thirteenth edition.

Summary: A+ Help
Review: Excellent supplementary resource for A+ Test certification preparation. It gives detailed and comprehensive information on all topics related to the technical aspects of PC support and hardware related problems. A 'must have' for your library.

Summary: Best Computer Book I have ever read
Review: This is the best technical support book I have ever read!! I had a few problems with my PC, bought a copy of this book, and in a few hours my machine was running better than ever. This book has all the answers, I would recommend it to anyone with a PC problem, large or small. Thanks Scott for the incredible book!!

Summary: 90% filler, and a bunch of errors
Review: The 12th edition of URP looks comprehensive at first glance but if you drill down you find that most of what you need is missing. Much of what's in this book is filler, obviously added just to make the book look more impressive than it really is. All the filler does is make what actual information is here harder to find. The book has a bunch of technical mistakes including many that have carried over from edition to edition.

If you want a really good PC hardware book check out PC Hardware in a Nutshell from O'Reilly. I just picked up a copy last week and haven't had time to go through it in detail but the chapters I've read so far have been information-dense and free of errors. The Nutshell book is a third the size and half the price of URP but contains much more actual useful information. If you buy the Nutshell book first you probably won't need URP.

Summary: A PC Guru's Bible!
Review: Scott Mueller does an incredible job of researching most all aspects of the PC. This book contains everything from the history and breakdown of different types of processors to in-depth explanations and tips for just about every device that integrates with a PC. Other subjects include internet connections and comparisons (i.e DSL, cable, T1, etc.), troubleshooting periferal conflicts, PC voltages patterns, and plenty of diagrams and illustrations.
