Rating: Summary: Not very deep Review: I'm not as positive as the other folks. The book spends a good amount of time teaching non-programming topics (surprising, given it's title). And I learned much more, both in programming and non-programming topics, in the "running microsoft access 2000" book. "Programming access 2000" really flies over a lot of programming topics. For example, it spends 27 pages on "forms", which of course includes data entry. "Running Microsoft Access" has 62 pages on using VB in forms, but also a chapter on using macros for data entry, and another chapter partly dedicated to the topic, and a whole chapter dedicated to VB fundamentals. In other words, probably 3 times as much. In fairness, Programming Access covers many more topics, like working with other MSFT applications, but I thought the book would focus on the fundamentals of creating a great Access Application, not quick run throughs of many topics.
Rating: Summary: All you need to know about Access 2000 - in one book Review: Rick Dobson has done a complete job of covering Access 2000 - in one book. If you're trying to develop an application or put an Access Database on the Web, this should get you started. Highlights are - using VBA to create a neat user dialog box that requests a report's parameters and then a tight display of the results - all in the same area (page 297.) There are also useful 3rd Party demos on the diskette - I found the Accounting software exciting.
Rating: Summary: This book is right for the defined audience Review: Rick Dobson says his book is for Access developers who want to learn about the "advances introduced in Access 2000", developers using other databases who want to learn "how to implement the concepts within Access", and for Access power users who want to graduate to developing solutions for others. The book serves the needs of those defined audiences very well (but it isn't supposed to be, and isn't, for the novice user nor is it an introduction to Access).Dr. Dobson has a flair for writing simple, understandable explanations of subjects that are anything but simple. He's done a fine job on this book and I recommend it highly.

Rating: Summary: A very good book, but not for beginners! Review: The book is a good guide for people who have some experience with Access, and does an especially good job in introducing the new features in Access 2000, such as the use of ADO. However, do not buy this book expecting to learn the basics of Access from it. It is filled with acronyms and terms which will lose you unless you previously know what they mean, although the author does a good job giving a brief explanation of each one. Otherwise it is a great book and a good guide to VBA for people who have already played around with Access.
Rating: Summary: Save your money Review: There may be some good Access/VBA books out there. This is notone of them. The section on Office integration is almostworthless. This is not for the beginner and experienced developerswill get little from it. To be fair, there are a few cute techniquesyou can pick up from this book, and it might be worth having around ifyou could pick it up off a bargain table for less than ....
Rating: Summary: Provides a basic scope of the features of Access 2000 Review: This books does a great job of describing the basic attributes and functions of Access 2000, I was expecting more code examples and techniques based on the Programming term used in the title.
Rating: Summary: An Excellent Introduction Review: This is a high quality book. It is a joy to read something this well conceived and executed. The book's approach enables programmers with little Access experience to quickly absorb the essentials of programming an Access database. I suspect (although I don't know) that the more advanced topics in the book are also of high quality.
