Summary: an excellent book
Review: With many small, practical examples, the authos present the concept in most Chapters very clearly. Also included are many easy-to follow code segments that can be reused. Highly recommend for any Java server side programmers with basic knowledge of servlets.

Rating: 2 stars
Summary: Only recommendable for the Servlets part
Review: The chapters by Andrew Patzer about Servlets are well written and informative, so the book starts promising. However the quality of the rest of the book rates between reasonably good, mediocre and very bad. I my opinion the worst of all is the the chapter on smart servlets, where I wonder if the authors really know about what they are talking. The appendices on the various APIs are close to useless. That the book is badly designed with horrible typography does not really contribute to a good impression.

Summary: Great survey of the technology!
Review: This is a great book! I don't know how they crammed so much good stuff into such a (relatively) small package.

My one quibble comes in the chapter about moving from CGI to servlets. In my experience, JSP can do everything servlets can do, and be more easily integrated into HTML as well. In this case, I've simply taken all the CGI-to-servlet mapping imformation and used it in JSP. Minor quibble. Overall, this is a great book.

Summary: A well written book with good example
Review: This is possible the best book available on Java Server side programming. It covers a wide Varity of topics. Most of the topics are well written. But still I believe the XML chapter(s) could be re-written. And a chapter on XSL could be added.

Summary: Amazing book for server programming.
Review: Very rich! Good quality. useful and readable! Great!

Summary: The best available overview of Java server technologies
Review: I would recommend this book to any programming shop that either does Java development or just going to.Great overview and coverage of all aspects for Java server development. Excellent examples are provided.Great support on internet, the entire source code is easy to access and to download.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: A little bit of everything
Review: An excellent resource for conceptualizing internet development resources. Lot's of excellent diagrams for visual learners. Lot's of examples for hands-on practice. The best thing I liked about this book is that it assumes you know nothing, but at the same time does not "dummy down" the material. Each chapter has a high-level overview of the topic including industry or historical information. Then there is more detail with an example and the example is broken down step by step. Although written by many people it flows quite well.

Summary: This book rules, buy it.
Review: This book rules. I've been buying about 1 server java programming book a week it seems, this one is head and shoulders above all of the rest. Buy this book. Other books are maybe 5% useful, this one has to be over 80%.

Rating: 4 stars
Summary: Good intro to lots of topics
Review: Definately not a reference book. But it does introduce you to lots of new ideas. Very useful in my opinion

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Terrific book with lots of examples
Review: I originally bought this book for its information on Javaserver Pages, but this book contains much much more. It covered areas like Database connections and connection pooling, EJBs, etc. that normally you need seperate books for each topic. The examples are small (a good thing) and clearly demonstrate the topics presented. If you want to do javaserver programming, this is the book!
