Summary: **** Techies - get me! ****
Review: Hehhehe... Borrowed this book from a friend who was finding it alittle bit above the learning curve he was looking for, but I loved the heck out of it. I guess it should be aimed at a higher level reader. I didn't, however, have any problems with the code - as long as you're using MySQL or a decent SQL server you should be fine.

Summary: I spent hours debugging the authors code!!!
Review: This was my first endeavor into the world of Ultradev - and I really wasn't in the mood for a trial by fire learning experience. After getting through the book, I now know quite a bit about Ultradev, but that's only because I had many opportunities to get into the code editor and fix the mistakes in the book! Very hard to follow and the author presumes that you know remember how to do some obscure coding from 7 chapters ago! I suppose you could learn Ultradev in 21 days - if you spend 8 hours on each chapter every day. I fully do not recommend this book.

Summary: Nice "Build As You Go" Organization
Review: I'm a fan of series like the "in 21 days" books because they break topics into logic units, instead of using a listing format like reference series. This is a good one because it starts slow and builds, as it should, to somewhat ambitious projects. The author does a good job of explaining the building blocks before implementing them and of calling attention to potential problems -- this book is worth it alone for the trouble-shooting help it gives.

There is a problem in the combination of Dreamweaver basics and UltraDev/Database set-up in the same book because the complexity of the 2 parts are far apart. Buying it for one part of the other is fine (I bought for the UltraDev help) but be aware that you may be bored or highly challenged when going sequentially through the book. I'd blame the software more than the book for this.

Summary: Technical "beginner" book
Review: Teach Yourself UltraDev in 21 Days is a book for people who are technically inclined but maybe not experienced with web work. I've been programming Fortran for 17 years - I didn't know anything about web development. I think this book did a good job of speaking to people like me.

I have to say to the person who questioned why the book deserves a good review - because I liked it! Every title is going to have people who like it and dislike it. To each his own. I think books like this have trouble finding the right audience. I'm glad I found it.

Summary: Projects are completely the point
Review: Not being a fan of these books, I picked up this 21 day title and read through it. Bought it for the last 7 days of projects. i don' think I've spent more than an hour or two on the rest. They should publish the final week in a seperate volume!

Summary: Good book, mediocre product
Review: I liked this book more than I actually like UltraDev. I purchased UltraDev thinking it was going to compete with InterDev Studio and other RAD tools. Instead it lets you whack together sites that list data in stored in a database. Big deal. If that's what you're looking for, get yourself a copy of Frontpage 2000 instead. Thankfully, the writer seems to have a few of the same frustrations that I do, and manages to use UltraDev (with a decent backend database) to create a few sites of actual use. I'll keep the book, but UltraDev needs more work before it becomes useful for most people.

Summary: *THE* definitive buying guide for this book.
Review: 1. Do you want to learn what UltraDev can do?2. Do you want some good examples?3. Are you not afraid to use SQL?I agree that the book was probably rushed, but I think it's really good. If you're more technically minded, i suggest that you buy the book for the three reasons I listed above. It's not the most indepth DreamWeaver book or the most indepth UltraDev book - it's the most interesting book I've found though.

Summary: Practical Knowledge
Review: If this book has a fault, its trying to do too much in not enough space. As others have said, I enjoyed the writing style and (before writing this) emailed the author to find out about any other works he may have done. I finished the book feeling good about what I had learned and feeling like I can finally tackle some of the more interesting tasks at work. The book is project-oriented, so you spend the first two "weeks" learning the basics of UltraDev, then the last seven days doing real production-style work. The flow worked for me, and I recommended the title to several friends. If you're only interested in design, I recommend maybe a seperate Dreamweaver book - but if you want to make some cool projects, get this one!

Summary: The best example of a horrible book
Review: This book is not only useless but quite frankly it is horrible! The authors have no clear objective in their presentation of the material. The layout is even worse making it very boring and difficult to follow. The authors may know what they are talking about but they definitely don't know how to write good book. One begins to wonder if the publishers were in a rush to get the book onto the shelves. If you need a useful book, THIS IS NOT IT! It is amazing that anyone could write a favorable review for a book this horrible. This is the first review that I have written and it is because I am truly disgusted with the mediocrity of this book

Summary: !!! Learn Alot !!!!
Review: I wasn't that excited to buy this book. I keep feeling like I'm just never going to "get" UltraDev. This book changed my mind - not only does the author tell you straight out that UltraDev *can't* do everything, he actually shows you how to do things that I would have never figured out on my own.

The other UltraDev books I have (4 including this one, so far!) have seemed more like advertisements for UltraDev than real-life guides. Try this book if you're interested in learning what UltraDev is good for, and how to make it better at things that it isn't good at....
