Rating: Summary: Deserves More Than 5 Stars Review: This is a book for everyone who wish to learn more about Photoshop. Although this book is meant for intermediate to expert users, I strongly feel that beginners can get a lot out of this book. The book is wonderful in .. oh so many ways! First, it includes so many visual guides ranging from basic Photoshop palletes to complex Photoshop graphics to help illustrate the text. Second, it concisely yet thoroughly covers everything a serious user of Photoshop needs to know about Photoshop such as: setting up the work environment and monitor callibration; the various factors to be considered in scanning, printing, file saving; fancy graphic manipulations. Third, it comes with a cd that includes hands-on exercises which are superbly explained in a step-by-step manner in a few chapters of the book. These exercises help to clarify Photoshop features like Levels, Curve, etc. Fouth, it includes chapters on ImageReady 2 for web and multimedia presentations. Fifth, the book is written as a reference, so that the reader need not to read the whole book to find out how to use a certain function like Snapshot. Still, the book reads well from chapter to chapter. I can say much more about how wonderful this book is. However, the most important thing I can tell to someone who is interested in purchasing this book is that it makes learning and understanding Photoshop less frustrating because it is so thorough yet very concise. Whether you are a digital artist, photographer, web designer, or just a curious individual, you'll find that the book covers just about everything you need to know about Photoshop. All you need afterwards is your own creativity.

Rating: Summary: Very Comprehensive! Review: This is a very comprehensive book on Photoshop 5.5. It is targeted for inter/advance readers, graphic designers and photographers since some hands on projects in the book are quite complicated. You will benefit more if you have the basic knowledge of photographic and color theory. I read Adobe's Classroom in a Book and the Wow book series before. They are a lot simpler. The latter is good for those who just want to pick the special effect or the technique they saw in the book. Both of them focus more on "how to". This book is different. It tells you "why" and "how to". Therefore it is good for those who are serious to know Photoshop. Cos Photoshop is a complicated application. It will be wasted if one just use it to remove a red eye, add shadow or create simple web graphics. About sixty pages in Photoshop 5 & 5.5 Artistry are dedicated to Photoshop 5.5. All the other chapters are the same of Photoshop 5 Artistry.
Rating: Summary: The best Review: This is an excellent book. If you have PS 6, get the updated version of the book (I have a much more comprehensive review of that book). In short, this book is well written, easy to read, and yet thoroughly covers the subject. There are two camps of PS users: artists and photographers. This book is for the photographers. Half the book is background and theory and here's how to do the things you do with photos. The other half is very comprehensive walkthroughs of how to do real work to photos. All of the examples are supplied on the CD, so you can start with the originals, and compare your result with his. This is my bible for PS. It's not a step by step book, though, so is better for Intermediate to Advanced users.
Rating: Summary: Marvelous Review: This is incredibly valuable, great stuff, and worth the price of the book many times over. You can hunt high and low and not find this information anywhere else.
Rating: Summary: Best Tutorial on Photoshop! Review: This is the book I definitely recommend to anyone looking for a good hands-on Photoshop tutorial. It has everything: good, clear information; a well-organized CD with all images used in the tutorials; a review of tools, color calibration, the use of histograms and curves. But best of all are the tutorials themselves, where along with the authors you work on images to improve and/ or change color, contrast, sharpness, etc. Also included is a great tutorial on compositing photos - worth the money for the book for that alone. If you are buying only one Photoshop book, search no further - this is it!

Levels have never been explained better and explaining and using Ansel Adams Zone System is great. It is the first book that finally made me understand curves, and I've been looking for 2 years. Photoshop 5 was such a great book I took one of Barry Haynes seminars what was great and I highly recommend. IF YOU WANT A GREAT PHOTOSHOP BOOK THIS IS THE ONE.
