Summary: The best PL/SQL manual around!
Review: After reading this book, my programming skills leaped from Oracle kindergartener to Oracle goddess! As well as a great introduction to PL/SQL and a thorough reference, this book sits right next to my keyboard when I program. It not only covers basic PL/SQL, but also Oracle built-in packages, objects, collections, debugging, and the list goes on. Whether you're just getting started or having been programming for a while, this is an invaluable resource.

Summary: Excellent for beginners and experts alike...
Review: I bought this book as a complete Oracle novice, transitioning from Microsoft T-SQL to PL/SQL. I was worried about the transition being difficult until I read this book.

It is one of those very rare books that presents advanced concepts in a context understandable by users of all experience levels. The author often throws in tips about Oracle PL/SQL quirks to watch out for, as well as some very applicable information about how Oracle works internally.

I've since become more comfortable with PL/SQL, and the book also serves as a great reference. I highly encourage you to read this book straight through.

I recommend this well-written book to anybody wanting to learn PL/SQL, as well as anyone needing a great reference.

Summary: Average standard
Review: I feel the book should contain the working examples. some of examples in this book challenges the reader's debugging power. For the first time reader this kind of interaction is not welcome. for eg; in the page 818 , eg. relating to LOB variables, the sql is not working. particularly for the clob declaration . the error says "default character set is of varying width". Please give the intial reader with some working examples.

Summary: One the Best Documents on Oracle 8 PL/SQL features
Review: I found "Oracle8 Pl/Sql Programming" to be worth my time and money. Reading the "Oracle8 Pl/Sql Programming" book was like being in the Oracle Education course without paying $2000. Here's why - each chapter has short narrative descriptions of the topics followed by a lab you can do. I like the learn by experimentation approach. Beneficial topics were: Oracle Objects, Collections, DBMS_OUTPUT, TEXT_IO, cursors, and Dynamic cursors. I found "Oracle8 PL/SQL Programming" far superior to the Oracle documentation.

Summary: excellent book for development and reference !!!
Review: I found the book altogether excellent but the examples all center around a class room environment. Most development is for businesses centred around employees. The section on exception handling needs additional information, which is found in other books on the same subject. Overall, its an excellent book, well written and a great help in development and plsql programming !!!

Summary: Useful but not very helpful
Review: I found the book to be useful as a reference but not as a way to learn pl/sql. The main problem is with the examples. There are numerous examples throughout the book and they all seem to be centered around the idea of students, courses, rooms, etc. Through the use of these examples, the author illistrates many of the concepts of pl/sql. However, I find that the auther gets bogged down in showing the examples as opposed to illistrating the concepts.

One of the must used statements in SQL is the select statement. However, the author chooses to use the insert, delete, and update statements much more than the select statement.

The author references previous example material frequently in the book. Unless you have a perfect memory, this creates a lot of page flipping in order to review the referenced example and grasp the concept. It would be far better to illistrate the concept in a single, straight forward example.
