Summary: Not Like the Hardcover
Review: I found the book extremely helpful until chapter 13. It is well written and the explanations clear and concise. The tutorials are straight forward using the files image files and source code provided at the listed web site. Unfortunately, the web site is for the 1st Edition. Chapter 13+, the files at the web site no longer apply with the tutorials. These are particularly important chapters involving embedding sound and images. The publisher has acknowledged the missing info but has yet to rectify the situation. The hardcover professional edition provides a cd with all necessary files. The softcover is the cheaper and unsupported red-headed step-child. Money would be better spent on the hardcover edition, at least you will be able to complete the tutorials.

Summary: Sams Teach Yourself Web Publishing with HTML 4 in 21 Days
Review: I found this book to be very well written. I began reading this book with minimal knowledge of computers let alone web page design. I am now designing attractive webpages for small businesses. I strongly recommend this book for anyone who wants to learn web page design using HTML 4.0.

Summary: Book tries to cover to much.
Review: I had to buy this book for a class, and I found it useless. It is way to big, and covers to much. You would be better off buying seperate books for what you are interested in. The author squeezes topics into one chapter that should fill a book. I found things that were technically inaccurate, and the web pages generated by the author, on the enclosed CD, do not have a pleasing appearance. The only part of this book I liked was the appendix, which contained good referance information. You can learn to create web pages from this book, but the results are not all that great.

Summary: Teach Yourself Web Publishing with HTML 4 in 21 Days
Review: I specified this book to teach a Web Site Design class. I really liked the "Teach Yourself HTML 3.0" book, so I decided to use this one. It has a lot of information presented in a very methodical manner. It's not as visually pleasing as the previous version though, nor does it have color illustrations. Great desk reference!

Summary: A good HTML 4 Beginners Reference to Start With
Review: I wrote my first web site utilizing the fundamentals outlined in this book. It will definately get you started writing and posting your pages to the website of your choice. However, the examples in the later chapters of the book really needed to explained better. This book is a must though, if your new to HTML!

Summary: Outstanding
Review: I've been working with two computer instruction books this last week. One was so terrible that I had to come here to Amazon to warn people away from it(I'll let that one remain nameless here)while the other one--this one--is so good that I want to encourage everyone to take the plunge. The author is a born teacher, presenting new concepts at the right pace and in a perfectly clear manner. Her examples are laced with a gentle sense of oddball humor in places, and a surprising degree of literacy in others, and it's all in the service of helping you learn and prodding you towards making creative and well-written web pages. A pleasure. The more people who read this, the better off the web will be.

Summary: Excellent Resource for Beginner/Intermediate
Review: I've come back to this volume again and again in my work as a professional webmaster. It's great for those just beginning to work with HTML or those like me who have a strong grasp of HTML but have some gaps in our knowledge. The index is thorough and helpful, and the examples are clear and concise.

Where it does come up lacking, though, is when you get off the beaten path with your HTML work - trying to do non-standard things, for instance. This book is not for advanced HTML tricks - it's for fundamentals. It does an excellent job at what it set out to do - couple it with an advanced HTML programming reference (from Que or Sybex, for example) and you'll have almost all your HTML bases covered.

Summary: Friendly writing style imparts the subject matter very well
Review: I've liked Laura Lemay's style since way back when we posted in the same Usenet newsgroups nearly a decade ago. I have many of her reference books and I find Sam's Teach Yourself Web Publishing With Html 4 in 21 Days to be her best work yet. Laura's style has matured to the point where I find something to learn on each page. Although I'm an accomplished Web page developer, I still refer to her book often.

Summary: Not Bad for beginners
Review: It is a good book for beginners!I finish it in 49 days due to my school activities & examination. It teach you most of the HTML 4 but if you are looking for Dynamic HTML & Extension HTML this is not for you.

Summary: Great book for beginners
Review: Laura Lemay has become one of the premier writers of web development texts, and this book is a good example. Many entry level texts get you started using code that has been depricated by the W3C, knowing full well that future browsers may not support the coding methods they are teaching. Laura does an excellent job of introducing newcomers to the "art" of web development while at the same time, prepares them for impending changes in the coding standards. The basics are well covered with easy to understand examples. Advanced techniques are introduced in such a way as not to confuse the novice. While the book does not come with a CD rom with sample code, most books this size are considerably more expensive. In my opinion, the trade off was well worth it. This book is an absolute must have for the novice who is serious about learning HTML.
